Chennai Metro Phase-2 First Stretch Receives CRS Green Light for Imminent Opening
The inaugural segment of Chennai Metro's ambitious Phase-2 project, spanning 14.6 kilometers from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani, is on the brink of commencing operations. This milestone follows the crucial authorisation granted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), which is mandatory for commissioning the line. However, the initial service rollout will be implemented with specific operational constraints to ensure safety and efficiency.
Operational Details and Restrictions for the New Metro Stretch
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), train services will operate under a phased approach with notable restrictions. Between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction metro stations, trains will run at intervals of 15 minutes, providing a baseline frequency for commuters. In contrast, the section from Porur Junction to Vadapalani metro stations will see more limited operations, with only one train in each direction running at a time, maintaining a 20-minute frequency. Additionally, speeds on this segment will be capped at 25 kilometers per hour, significantly lower than the typical average of 35 kmph observed in other metro corridors.
As a result of these measures, the complete end-to-end journey along this new stretch is projected to take approximately 35 minutes. Upon arrival at Vadapalani metro station, passengers will need to utilize a skywalk to access the Phase-1 Vadapalani metro station, where they can either board connecting metro trains or exit the system entirely. This transfer arrangement is designed to integrate the new phase with existing infrastructure seamlessly.
CRS Approval Conditions and Infrastructure Requirements
The CRS approval for this stretch comes with a critical stipulation that must be met before full operations can commence. Specifically, services between Porur Junction and Vadapalani can only begin after the completion of 26 deck slabs on the double-decker section of Corridor-5. CMRL has indicated that this construction work is expected to be finalized by March 25, adhering to the regulatory mandate. A spokesperson from CMRL clarified, "The approval was given for the entire stretch, but the condition is that we must complete 26 deck slabs on the double-decker line before commissioning." This condition underscores the emphasis on structural integrity and safety in the metro's expansion.
Project Scope and Station Accessibility
This 14.6-kilometer stretch is an integral component of the larger 26.1-kilometer Corridor-4, which extends from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass. It forms part of the comprehensive 118.1-kilometer Phase-2 project aimed at enhancing Chennai's urban transit network. The elevated segment features 17 stations in total, but upon the initial launch, only 11 stations will be operational. These include 10 stations situated between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, along with the Vadapalani station. This selective opening strategy allows CMRL to manage passenger flow and ensure a smooth transition as the metro network expands.
The imminent opening of this stretch marks a significant step forward in Chennai's public transportation development, promising improved connectivity and reduced travel times for residents. As infrastructure work progresses, commuters can anticipate more efficient and integrated metro services in the near future.
