In a significant move to enhance its maritime operational capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard has entered into a crucial contract with the defence arm of Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The deal, signed on February 21, 2024, is for the acquisition of six state-of-the-art Rail-Less Helicopter Traversing Systems.
Boosting Offshore Patrol Vessel Capabilities
The contract was formally exchanged between Inspector General Rakesh Pal, the Director of Acquisition at the Indian Coast Guard, and Vice Admiral B Kannan (Retd.), who serves as the Head of L&T Defence's Shipbuilding business. The signing ceremony took place at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, marking a pivotal step in the force's modernization drive.
These sophisticated systems are specifically designed for integration onto the Coast Guard's new-generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs). The primary function of the Rail-Less Helicopter Traversing System is to ensure the safe and secure movement of helicopters on the ship's deck. It is a critical piece of equipment that facilitates the launch, recovery, and parking of rotary-wing aircraft in the challenging and dynamic environment of the open sea.
A Strategic 'Make in India' Initiative
This procurement is a direct outcome of the Indian government's 'Make in India' policy, aimed at bolstering indigenous defence manufacturing. The contract with L&T Defence underscores the growing capability of the Indian private sector to design and deliver complex, mission-critical systems for the armed forces.
The system will play a vital role in expanding the operational reach and effectiveness of the Coast Guard's maritime patrols. By enabling safer helicopter operations from smaller OPVs, it enhances surveillance, search and rescue (SAR), and medical evacuation capabilities far from the Indian coastline.
Enhancing Maritime Safety and Security
The induction of these six systems represents a tangible upgrade for the Coast Guard's fleet. The rail-less technology is considered advanced, offering greater flexibility and reliability compared to traditional rail-based systems. This deal is not just about equipment; it's about empowering the men and women of the Indian Coast Guard with better tools to protect the nation's vast maritime interests.
The Coast Guard's role in safeguarding India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), combating smuggling, and providing humanitarian assistance is set to receive a significant boost. Efficient helicopter operations are a force multiplier, allowing for quicker response times and more effective monitoring of sea lanes.
This contract follows a series of orders placed by the Ministry of Defence with L&T for similar Traversing Systems, indicating a sustained trust in the company's engineering prowess. The successful execution of this order will further cement L&T's position as a leading player in the domestic defence manufacturing landscape and contribute directly to India's goal of self-reliance in defence.
