At the age of 59-60, Devni Devi felt a pressing need to contribute to her family's finances. With limited options due to her lack of formal education, she turned to what she knew best: cooking. Starting from her own kitchen, she began preparing meals for students in Patna, though her venture was initially met with skepticism and disrespect from both her joint family and outsiders.
"It was looked upon as chhota kaam (small work)," she remembers vividly. Despite the discouragement, Devni persevered through Patna's brutal summers where temperatures soared to nearly 50°C, laboring in her kitchen to provide nutritious meals to students she believed deserved better food options.
A Lifetime of Kitchen Labor
Married at just 16 into a large joint family, Devni Devi had spent decades performing thankless kitchen duties that countless women endure as part of household responsibilities. When her family relocated to Patna for the children's education, rising expenses prompted her desire to contribute financially. Her breakthrough moment came when she noticed the poor-quality food in a medical student's tiffin box, shocking her into action.
She began offering meals for just ₹20 each, but this "small" enterprise drew criticism rather than praise. Relatives and even some family members questioned her motives, with some asking pointedly: "Does your husband not earn enough?" These comments wounded her husband deeply, leading to months of strained silence between them.
Overcoming Pandemic Challenges
As her tiffin service gradually gained traction through word-of-mouth recommendations, the COVID-19 pandemic threatened to undo all her progress. With students returning home, her customer base dwindled dramatically. Rather than surrender to circumstances, Devni adapted by shifting to home deliveries, where the genuine quality of her food slowly rebuilt demand.
The turning point arrived when one of her sons began sharing photos and videos of her work on social media. The organic content resonated deeply with viewers, dramatically expanding her visibility without any formal marketing strategy.

Today, what began as a modest tiffin service has transformed into Amma's Kitchen—a thriving restaurant with a takeaway outlet that generates an impressive annual turnover of ₹2.5 crore and provides employment to 15 people. Remarkably, Devni Devi herself remains digitally disconnected, unable to use smartphones or social media platforms, with only the ability to write her own name.
"From my mother's experience, we have learned one thing—there is no substitute for quality, consistency, and honest work," explains her son Durgesh, a communications professional based in Delhi. "All my mother did was work hard and make good food. We never focused on publicity, but people kept coming to us. Now we have decoded the magic—it is simply good work."
Inspiring Financial Independence
Now 65 years old, Devni actively encourages other women to pursue economic self-sufficiency. She frequently asks them: "Tum to padhe-likhe ho, tum kama kyun nahi lete apna? (You are educated, why don't you earn your own money?)" Her firm belief that women should achieve financial independence to support their families equally with men has become a cornerstone of her advocacy.
Amma's Kitchen now ranks among Patna's top five most-ordered food establishments, a testament to Devni's unwavering commitment to quality. "One thing I have realized is that good work always pays," Durgesh shares with palpable pride. "My mother's life has taught us this beautiful lesson."
The loyalty of repeat customers forms the bedrock of her business success, proving that authentic dedication to craft can overcome even the absence of traditional marketing approaches.
