The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to introduce in-train audio advertisements across four major metro lines—Red, Yellow, Blue, and Magenta—as part of a strategy to enhance its non-ticketing revenue. The move aims to transform metro trains into premium advertising platforms, aligning with global transit systems and airports that utilize audio commercials.
Expansion of Audio Ads to Busiest Corridors
Following a successful pilot on the Violet Line in December 2023, the DMRC has floated a tender inviting agencies to manage and market audio advertisement slots on six trains each on the Red (Line 1), Yellow (Line 2), Blue (Line 3), and Magenta (Line 8) corridors. An official stated that the Yellow Line, connecting Kashmere Gate and Sultanpur, offers 596 seconds of audio inventory in both directions, making it one of the most lucrative routes. The Red Line, from Dilshad Garden to Rithala, has the highest total inventory at 721 seconds, followed by the Blue Line (Dwarka to Yamuna Bank) with 634 seconds, and the Magenta Line (Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden) with 300 seconds.
Passenger Information Priority
Advertisements will only be aired during silent intervals between routine operational announcements, ensuring that passenger information and safety messages remain uninterrupted. The DMRC has mandated adequate gaps between commercials to maintain commuter convenience. According to the official, the system follows international practices where commercial announcements are carefully integrated without disrupting essential travel information. Sound quality, volume, and frequency of ads will be regulated to avoid inconvenience.
Revenue Sharing and CSR Allocation
The selected agency will be responsible for marketing inventory, scheduling ads, coordinating technical execution, and maintaining financial records. The DMRC will receive 85% of the gross revenue from advertisements, with the licensee retaining the remaining 15%. Additionally, up to 5% of the total advertising inventory in each train will be reserved for social or corporate social responsibility (CSR) messages, with the DMRC bearing the cost of airing such public-interest campaigns.
Innovative Advertising Opportunities
The DMRC has encouraged agencies to develop innovative advertising opportunities that complement Delhi's image and showcase its heritage and cultural identity. The corporation emphasized that commuter convenience remains paramount, and service announcements will always take precedence over commercial messages. The expansion of in-train audio ads is expected to significantly boost the DMRC's non-fare revenue while providing a non-intrusive advertising medium for brands.
