East Central Railway Achieves Landmark High-Speed Trial on Grand Chord Route
In a significant advancement for India's rail network, the East Central Railway (ECR) has successfully conducted a high-speed trial at 180 kilometers per hour on the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU)–Gaya–Pradhankhunta Junction (Dhanbad) route. This milestone, achieved on Wednesday, covers a critical 417-kilometer stretch under ECR's jurisdiction, marking a pivotal step in modernizing the Grand Chord corridor.
Enhanced Speed and Efficiency for Key Rail Corridor
Under the personal supervision of ECR General Manager Chhatrasal Singh, the trial has officially raised the speed limit from 160 kmph to 180 kmph on this section. According to ECR's Chief Public Relations Officer Saraswati Chandra, this upgrade is expected to significantly improve traffic efficiency and reduce travel times for trains operating between New Delhi and Howrah via the Grand Chord route. The move aligns with broader efforts to enhance the performance of high-density rail lines across the country.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Safety Measures Implemented
To support the increased speeds, extensive infrastructure improvements have been undertaken, including track strengthening and other critical upgrades. A key highlight of this project is the installation of the indigenous Kavach system, an advanced anti-collision and automatic train protection technology. Developed to bolster safety and reliability, the Kavach system has been implemented at a cost of Rs 1,822 crore, ensuring better control over train movements and minimizing accident risks.
Strategic Focus on Rail Modernization and Network Development
Sources indicate that ECR has been prioritizing comprehensive infrastructure development, particularly on vital routes like the Grand Chord, which plays a crucial role in connecting northern and eastern India. This successful trial represents a major stride toward faster, safer, and more efficient rail travel, supporting Indian Railways' Raftar vision for network modernization. The enhancements are projected to reduce travel time by 40 to 60 minutes for journeys between Delhi and Howrah via the Grand Chord corridor, ultimately improving the passenger experience and boosting overall rail operations.
