Fire Erupts at Bhilai Steel Plant, Injuring Seven Workers
A significant fire incident occurred at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Tuesday morning, resulting in injuries to seven workers. The blaze broke out in the STG-4 (Steam Turbo Generator-4) turbine located within the plant's power and blowing station-2, causing immediate panic and triggering a swift emergency response from plant authorities.
Emergency Response and Evacuation Efforts
Officials reported that the fire produced heavy smoke that rapidly filled the turbine hall, necessitating the urgent evacuation of all employees and workers from the affected area. Plant fire services were alerted promptly and rushed to the scene, deploying multiple fire tenders to combat the flames. Through coordinated efforts, the fire was brought under control within approximately one hour, after which the affected section was cooled and secured to prevent any reignition.
In an official statement, BSP authorities confirmed that workers present in the main switchgear room and control room were safely evacuated without major incident. However, during the hurried exit from the area, several workers sustained injuries as they navigated the chaotic environment.
Injuries and Medical Treatment
The injured included two regular employees and five contract workers, all of whom were promptly shifted to Sector-9 hospital in Bhilai for medical attention. While some of the workers suffered burn injuries due to the fire, one contract worker sustained a fracture during the evacuation process. Medical officials have stated that all seven individuals are currently undergoing treatment and are in stable condition, with no life-threatening injuries reported.
Authorities have confirmed that there was no loss of life in this incident, which is a relief given the potential severity of industrial fires. The quick response from emergency teams played a crucial role in preventing a more catastrophic outcome.
Investigation and Safety Measures
Eyewitnesses at the plant reported hearing a loud noise emanating from the turbine section just before the fire spread, leading to speculation about a possible explosion. However, plant authorities have not confirmed any explosion at this stage and emphasized that the exact cause of the fire will be determined only after a detailed investigation is completed.
Senior officials from the plant and the district administration arrived at the site shortly after the incident to monitor the firefighting and rescue operations. As a precautionary measure, security within the plant has been tightened to ensure no further incidents occur while the investigation is ongoing.
The fire caused a brief but intense scare among plant personnel, with thick smoke visible across various parts of the facility. Fortunately, the prompt and efficient response from the firefighting teams averted what could have been a major industrial mishap.
A formal probe has been initiated to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and to assess the extent of damage to the turbine unit and surrounding infrastructure. This investigation will likely involve technical experts examining equipment failures, safety protocol compliance, and potential human error factors.
