Historic Land Lease Agreement Signed for India's First Indigenous Coal Gasification Project
In a landmark development for India's energy and chemical sectors, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited have officially signed a comprehensive land lease agreement for a pioneering coal-to-ammonium nitrate project. This ambitious venture, located at Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district, will have a production capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day and represents a crucial milestone in the nation's strategic coal gasification roadmap.
Ministerial Presence and Strategic Importance
The agreement was formally executed in New Delhi on Wednesday under the distinguished presence of Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy. According to an official statement released by MCL on Thursday, this project holds the distinction of being India's first coal gasification initiative to utilize completely indigenous technology, developed domestically by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
The deployment of homegrown technology is anticipated to significantly diminish India's reliance on imported systems within the critical energy and chemical manufacturing domains, thereby advancing the national objective of technological sovereignty.
Project Specifications and Financial Backing
The transformative project will be established across 350 acres of land and has already secured substantial financial support amounting to Rs 1,350 crore. Government officials have emphasized that this initiative constitutes a major stride toward realizing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and will substantially fortify India's coal-based chemical value chain.
Recent policy reforms have been instrumental in facilitating this development, as they now permit land within coal-bearing regions to be allocated for coal gasification projects. Rapid Project Advancement and Contract Awards
Work on the Lakhanpur project has already gained considerable momentum. To accelerate implementation, two major contracts have been awarded to BHEL, with an additional two contracts secured by Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
Concurrent site development activities are progressing at full pace to maintain the project schedule. These include:
- Construction of the perimeter boundary wall
- Comprehensive tree enumeration and assessment
- Other preparatory groundwork essential for project commencement
Government Vision and Broader Coal Gasification Push
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy underscored the imperative to transcend conventional coal usage through the widespread adoption of coal gasification technologies. The Central Government has demonstrated its commitment by approving a substantial outlay of Rs 8,500 crore specifically to promote coal gasification across the country.
Reddy further revealed that seven projects have already been finalized under this initiative, with groundbreaking ceremonies completed for three of these ventures, indicating robust forward movement in this strategic sector.
