A devastating furnace explosion rocked a private steel plant in the Hesla area of Ramgarh district early on Monday, leaving nine workers injured, seven of them critically. The incident occurred around 4 am, sending shockwaves through the local community and prompting immediate emergency responses.
Critical Injuries and Emergency Medical Response
According to officials, the injured workers were swiftly transported to a private hospital in Ramgarh for initial treatment. However, due to the severity of their conditions, seven critically injured individuals, suffering from over 60% burn injuries, were later referred to another private hospital in Ranchi for advanced care. Ramgarh sub-divisional officer (SDO) Anurag Kumar Tiwari emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the district administration has directed the plant management to ensure optimal treatment, with potential referrals to New Delhi if necessary.
The injured have been identified as Akhila Rai, Brijlal Bedia, Raj Balan Yadav, Mahesh Mahto, Ashok Bediya, Panditji alias Raju Jha, Chhotu Sao, Suresh Bediya, and Ishaya. Their conditions remain under close medical supervision as authorities coordinate efforts for their recovery.
Villagers Block Factory Gate, Demand Justice and Safety Measures
As news of the explosion spread, hundreds of outraged villagers gathered at the factory gate, blocking access in a powerful protest. They alleged serious violations of safety protocols by the plant management, citing a delayed ambulance response that hindered the timely transportation of the injured. The protesters are demanding immediate compensation for the affected workers, the implementation of enhanced safety measures, and an impartial inquiry into the incident to hold those responsible accountable.
Political and Administrative Interventions
In response to the escalating tensions, Ramgarh MLA Mamta Devi and state Congress working president Shahzada Anwar visited the plant site to assess the situation. They engaged with the agitators, with Devi also holding discussions with plant officials to address the concerns raised by the local community. Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Faiz Aq Ahmad Mumtaz clarified that while the administration has not yet ordered a formal probe, the labour and employment department has taken proactive steps.
Chief factory inspector Manish Sinha confirmed that a panel has been formed to investigate the explosion thoroughly. The team is scheduled to conduct a site inspection imminently, with further actions to be determined based on their findings. The plant management has remained unavailable for comment on the incident, adding to the growing scrutiny and public outcry.
This tragic event underscores pressing issues regarding industrial safety and worker welfare in the region, as authorities and stakeholders grapple with the aftermath and seek to prevent future occurrences.
