GMDA Launches Major Infrastructure Project with Rs 755 Crore Tender for Elevated Corridor on Southern Peripheral Road
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility by floating a tender on Monday for a comprehensive infrastructure project on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). This ambitious initiative involves the development, maintenance, management, and operation of an elevated corridor stretching from NH-48 to Vatika Chowk, with an estimated cost of Rs 755 crore.
Project Details and Expected Benefits
According to a department spokesperson, the project is designed to transform the SPR into a signal-free corridor between Vatika Chowk and NH-48. This upgrade is expected to provide a long-term solution for improving mobility and managing the increasing traffic volumes in Gurugram, a city grappling with congestion issues. The elevated corridor will create an additional traffic layer, effectively reducing congestion at ground level and easing bottlenecks, which should lead to improved travel times, especially during peak hours.
GMDA CEO P C Meena emphasized that the proposed infrastructure upgrade will benefit residents and commuters from several sectors located along and around the SPR corridor. This includes newly developing residential and commercial clusters, highlighting the project's role in supporting Gurugram's growth and connectivity.
Technical Specifications and Timeline
The project entails the construction of a 4.2 km-long, signal-free 4+4 lane elevated corridor between Vatika Chowk and NH-48. The design incorporates comprehensive features to ensure smooth traffic flow:
- 3+3 lane primary service roads
- 2+2 lane secondary service lanes
- 2-lane up and down ramps at key junctions to facilitate seamless entry and exit of traffic
- An interchange at NH-48 to provide seamless connectivity with the national highway network
The project is slated for completion within a stipulated period of 30 months from the date of award, indicating a focused timeline for this critical infrastructure development.
Strategic Importance for Gurugram
This tender marks a pivotal move in strengthening connectivity along this key corridor in Gurugram. By addressing traffic congestion through an elevated structure, the GMDA aims to enhance the overall transportation network, supporting the city's economic and residential expansion. The investment of Rs 755 crore underscores the authority's commitment to sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for commuters and residents alike.
