Goa Industrial Development Corporation Launches Verna Estate Shuttle Service
The Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), in partnership with Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd (KTCL), has officially inaugurated a dedicated shuttle bus service for employees working at the Verna industrial estate. This initiative aims to address long-standing transportation challenges faced by factory workers in Goa's largest manufacturing park.
Service Details and Operational Framework
The shuttle service operates on a continuous closed-circuit loop, commencing from Titan Junction and traversing key areas throughout the industrial estate before returning to its starting point. Currently, one bus is operational, with plans to introduce a second vehicle on the same route shortly. The service runs daily from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM, providing comprehensive coverage for various shift patterns.
GIDC chairman Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco emphasized that the corporation will provide partial funding through viability gap financing to ensure the service remains sustainable for KTCL. "We have started with one bus, but there will be a second bus on the route. We look forward to expanding this service to most industrial estates wherever feasible," Lourenco stated.
Addressing Critical Transportation Gaps
Verna industrial estate, as Goa's premier manufacturing hub, has historically presented significant transportation challenges for its workforce. While larger pharmaceutical companies and multinational engineering plants typically operate their own private bus services, employees at smaller manufacturing units have had to rely exclusively on personal vehicles or limited company-provided transportation.
This disparity prompted the Verna Industrial Estate Association and the Goa State Industries Association (GSIA) to formally request government intervention to establish a comprehensive bus service. The newly launched shuttle addresses this persistent demand with a fixed fare of Rs 10 per ride, making it accessible to workers across different income levels.
Industry Response and Future Prospects
GSIA president Pradip da Costa welcomed the initiative as a solution to a long-standing industry requirement. "The early morning bus service will particularly benefit workers reporting for the 7 AM shift and will significantly improve workforce mobility across Verna, especially for women employees," da Costa explained. He further noted that additional buses will be necessary to adequately meet growing demand as the service gains popularity.
However, GIDC officials have clarified that the current shuttle operates as a pilot program that will undergo thorough evaluation based on operational performance metrics and user feedback. This assessment will determine potential expansion to other industrial estates throughout Goa and possible increases in service frequency.
The collaboration between GIDC and KTCL represents a strategic public-private partnership designed to enhance industrial productivity while improving quality of life for manufacturing employees. By providing reliable, affordable transportation, the initiative aims to reduce absenteeism, decrease traffic congestion from personal vehicles, and create a more efficient working environment throughout Verna industrial estate.
