Government Extends Quality Control Order Deadline for Electrical Appliances
The Indian government has announced a six-month extension for the implementation of the mandatory Quality Control Order (QCO) on specific electrical appliances, pushing the new deadline to October 1, 2026. This decision was confirmed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) through an official notification released on Monday.
Scope and Applicability of the QCO
The QCO applies to all electrical appliances designed for household, commercial, or similar uses, with rated voltages not exceeding 250 volts for single-phase appliances and 480 volts for other types. This includes appliances powered by direct current (DC) or batteries, ensuring a broad coverage of consumer electronics.
Goods covered under this order encompass a range of household electrical items, such as:
- Vacuum cleaners
- Cooking ranges and frying pans
- Appliances for heating liquids
- Electric heating tools
- Electric steam cookers
Background and Previous Extensions
This is not the first time the implementation timeline has been adjusted. Previously, in May 2025, the deadline was extended to March of the current year, indicating ongoing efforts to balance regulatory compliance with industry readiness.
Significance Amid Rising Demand for Induction Appliances
The extension holds particular importance as the government actively encourages companies to increase production of induction heaters and compatible utensils. This push comes in response to growing consumer demand for alternative cooking solutions, driven by concerns over Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) availability.
The West Asia crisis has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, impacting global oil and gas supplies. This disruption has prompted a shift among consumers towards induction-based appliances, which offer a reliable and efficient alternative to traditional gas stoves.
By extending the QCO deadline, the government aims to provide manufacturers with additional time to align their production processes with quality standards, while simultaneously supporting the transition to energy-efficient cooking technologies in light of supply chain challenges.
