Gujarat Surges to Become India's Third-Largest Used Car Market in 2025

Ahmedabad: In a significant automotive market development, Gujarat has rapidly ascended to become India's third-largest used car market in 2025, capturing an impressive 13.5% of the total national demand, according to comprehensive market analysis conducted by Cars24. This remarkable achievement positions Gujarat behind only Maharashtra at 20.7% and Karnataka at 16.5%, while moving ahead of Uttar Pradesh at 13% and Tamil Nadu at 12%.

Rapid Growth and Structural Shift

The findings reveal an exceptionally swift rise for Gujarat's used car sector. The state's market share experienced a dramatic jump from 8.7% in 2024 to 13.5% in 2025 — representing a substantial increase of 4.8 percentage points within a single year. This constitutes one of the steepest gains observed among all major Indian states during this period.

Industry observers and analysts emphasize that this growth represents more than just temporary market fluctuation. They identify this as a structural shift within Gujarat's automotive landscape, with the state transitioning from what was previously considered a supplementary market to becoming a core demand driver in the national used vehicle ecosystem.

On-Ground Trends Driving Growth

Dealers and industry representatives confirm that these numbers reflect clear, observable trends within the state. Pranav Shah, chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) Gujarat, provided crucial insights into the changing consumer behavior. "Nearly 40% of new car purchases now involve exchanges," Shah revealed. "These transactions are largely driven by second-time buyers who are upgrading their existing vehicles."

The significant rise in new car prices over the past five years has created a powerful economic incentive for consumers to explore pre-owned vehicles as what Shah describes as "a more affordable alternative" to new purchases.

Robust Ecosystem and Market Evolution

A senior regional transport official explained how Gujarat's strong performance in new vehicle registrations naturally feeds and sustains the resale ecosystem. "Approximately 40% of buyers upgrade to higher variants, ensuring a steady and consistent flow of vehicles into the second-hand market," the official stated. "Online platforms now command a significant market share alongside traditional local dealers, creating a diverse marketplace."

The market itself has undergone substantial transformation. Once dominated primarily by local brokers and unorganized traders, Gujarat's used car segment has evolved to include organized platforms and manufacturer-backed certified programs that offer warranties and comprehensive quality checks. Improved loan availability for used cars has significantly narrowed the financing gap between new and pre-owned vehicles, substantially boosting buyer confidence and accessibility.

Regional Dynamics and Changing Ownership Patterns

Districts such as Anand and Mehsana experience additional market churn from Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) who purchase vehicles during their visits to India and subsequently resell them before returning abroad. The official added an interesting observation about market distribution: "In many cases, first-time buyers begin with a used car and upgrade to a new one within a year or two. Interestingly, the second-hand car market is actually stronger in rural areas than in urban centres."

Replacement cycles are also undergoing significant shortening across the state. "While vehicle ownership previously stretched much longer, many buyers now replace their cars within seven years, and in some urban pockets within just two to three years," Shah added. Business owners and members of the trading community — a key demographic in Gujarat's economic landscape — are among the most frequent upgraders, often balancing considerations of image with practical financial considerations.

This comprehensive market transformation positions Gujarat as a critical player in India's automotive future, with its used car market demonstrating remarkable resilience, innovation, and growth potential that reflects broader economic trends within the state.
