Gujarat Passenger Vehicle Market Sees Strong 11% Growth in FY2026

According to the latest registration data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Gujarat's passenger vehicle market recorded robust expansion in the fiscal year 2026, with total car sales increasing from 3.47 lakh units in FY2025 to 3.86 lakh units in FY2026. This represents a significant growth of over 11%, reflecting evolving consumer preferences that prioritize cost-effectiveness, performance capabilities, and specific usage patterns rather than a uniform shift toward clean mobility solutions.

Diesel Vehicles Defy Phase-Out Expectations with 16% Surge

Contrary to expectations of a gradual phase-out, diesel vehicles emerged as one of the most substantial contributors to Gujarat's automotive growth. Diesel registrations jumped by an impressive 16%, adding nearly 11,800 units year-on-year to reach 85,366 units in FY2026. Industry analysts attribute this resilience to sustained demand for SUVs and larger vehicles, where diesel engines continue to deliver superior torque, enhanced fuel efficiency, and reliable highway performance.

A strong preference for SUVs is driving diesel demand in Gujarat, explained an Ahmedabad-based automobile dealer. Buyers who frequently undertake long-distance travel still perceive diesel as the most practical and economical option available in the market. Rather than staging a dramatic comeback, diesel technology appears to be maintaining its relevance in specific vehicle segments where its advantages remain largely unmatched by alternative fuel systems.

SUV Popularity Reshapes Gujarat's Automotive Landscape

SUVs continue to gain substantial traction across Gujarat as families increasingly opt for long-distance road travel and recreational journeys. Consumers who previously favored sedans are now transitioning to SUVs for improved comfort, additional interior space, and greater driving confidence on highways and varied road conditions. A notable ownership pattern emerging in the state involves households maintaining one SUV primarily for travel purposes alongside another smaller car for daily urban commuting needs.

Within this evolving automotive mix, diesel-powered SUVs remain a preferred choice despite their higher upfront costs, as buyers prioritize long-term operational savings and performance characteristics that align with their travel requirements.

Petrol-CNG Vehicles Surge 14% as Gujarat Strengthens CNG Leadership

Petrol-CNG vehicles recorded substantial growth of over 14%, adding more than 18,000 units to reach 1,45,304 registrations in FY2026. With fuel prices remaining elevated across the country, urban and semi-urban buyers are increasingly gravitating toward CNG technology for its significantly lower running costs while retaining conventional drivetrain familiarity. This sustained growth further reinforces Gujarat's position as India's strongest and largest CNG vehicle market, benefiting from established infrastructure and consumer acceptance.

Electrified Segments Show Promise but Limited Volume Impact

Electrified vehicle segments posted impressive percentage gains during the fiscal year, with diesel hybrids growing by 55% and hybrid electric vehicles increasing by 36%. However, their absolute volumes remain relatively limited within the overall market framework. Pure electric vehicles demonstrated remarkable growth of 432%, yet their total registrations stood at just 13,005 units.

According to Pranav Shah, Chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) Gujarat, hybrid vehicles are gaining gradual acceptance as a transitional middle path amid ongoing electric vehicle adoption challenges. Higher acquisition costs and limited model availability continue to restrict wider market uptake of electrified options, Shah noted, highlighting the practical barriers facing cleaner mobility solutions in the current automotive ecosystem.

Market Evolution Toward Diversified Fuel Strategies

Petrol-only vehicle sales experienced a marginal decline of 1.2%, indicating gradual market churn rather than structural abandonment of conventional fuel technology. The comprehensive data reveals a passenger vehicle market evolving in multiple simultaneous directions, where consumers strategically optimize their fuel choices based on specific cost considerations, performance requirements, and usage patterns rather than making uniform transitions toward electrification.

This diversified approach to vehicle propulsion underscores the complex interplay between consumer preferences, economic factors, and technological availability shaping Gujarat's automotive sector. As the market continues to mature, manufacturers and policymakers must navigate this multifaceted landscape where traditional and emerging technologies coexist within consumer decision-making frameworks.
