Gujarat Government Places Major Order for 34 Metro Train Sets
The Gujarat state government announced on Wednesday a significant order for 34 new metro train sets, aimed at bolstering the urban transit systems in Ahmedabad and Surat. This strategic move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance public transportation infrastructure across the state.
Distribution of Train Sets for Metro Projects
According to an official statement, the order includes 10 metro train sets designated for Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 and 24 train sets for the upcoming Surat Metro. This allocation is designed to meet the growing demand for efficient and reliable urban mobility solutions in these key cities.
Manufacturing and Self-Reliance in High-Tech Solutions
The trains are being manufactured at Titagarh's advanced facility in Kolkata, highlighting India's increasing self-reliance in producing high-tech urban mobility equipment. This initiative not only supports domestic manufacturing but also showcases the country's capabilities in developing sophisticated public transport systems.
Impact on Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2
Under Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2, the 68.2-kilometer metro network in the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar corridor is already operational, with 32 train sets currently in service. The addition of 10 more train sets is expected to:
- Increase train frequency, reducing congestion during peak hours.
- Decrease waiting times for passengers, improving overall travel experience.
- Provide enhanced facilities and comfort for daily commuters.
Progress on Surat Metro Construction
The statement also noted that construction of the 40.3-kilometer metro rail network in Surat is currently underway. The 24 train sets ordered will be crucial for launching and operating this new system, which aims to transform public transport in the city.
Expansion of Gujarat's Metro Network
Currently, the metro rail network in Gujarat spans 108 kilometers. With this new order and ongoing projects, the network is estimated to expand to approximately 190 kilometers in the coming years. This expansion includes a previously planned 6.04-kilometer airport line, which will further strengthen connectivity and support economic growth in the region.
This initiative underscores the government's commitment to strengthening public transport facilities in Gujarat, promoting sustainable urban development, and reducing traffic congestion. By investing in metro systems, the state aims to provide better mobility options for residents and boost overall infrastructure quality.
