Gujarat Unveils Ambitious Industrial Roadmap for $3.5 Trillion Economy by 2047

In a significant announcement at the inauguration of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's centenary celebrations in Ahmedabad, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi outlined Gujarat's forward-looking strategy to sustain development through cutting-edge sectors. The state is positioning itself as a global hub for advanced industries, with a clear focus on semiconductors, data centres, and high-value infrastructure.

Semiconductors and Data Centres: Pillars of Future Growth

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized that Gujarat is set to accelerate its growth trajectory by embracing new-age industries. "More than 100 Fortune 500 companies are already operating in Gujarat, which underscores our standing as a premier destination for global investment," Patel stated. He highlighted the state's substantial economic contributions, noting that Gujarat accounts for 8.3% of India's GDP, 18% of the nation's industrial output, and an impressive 27% of total exports.

Patel revealed that Gujarat has become the first state in India to formulate a comprehensive "Viksit Gujarat @2047" roadmap. This ambitious plan targets a $3.5 trillion economy, with strategic emphasis on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, green growth initiatives, and women-led development programs.

Expanding Industrial and Digital Infrastructure

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi detailed the next phase of industrial expansion, which will centre on several high-potential sectors:

  • Data centres and semiconductor manufacturing
  • Global capability centres
  • Defence and aircraft manufacturing

Sanghavi made a striking prediction about Gujarat's digital infrastructure growth: "Over the next two to three years, Gujarat is expected to add more data centre capacity than the rest of India combined." He emphasized that semiconductor manufacturing is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of the state's industrial strategy.

The state is developing Asia's largest fabrication plant at Dholera, while Sanand is emerging as a major hub for assembly, testing, marking, and packaging operations. To prevent congestion in any single industrial corridor, similar infrastructure is being developed across multiple locations including Becharaji, Vadodara, and South Gujarat.

New Policies for Urban and Event Infrastructure

Alongside industrial growth, Gujarat is significantly expanding its urban and event-related infrastructure. Sanghavi announced that concert venues with capacities ranging from 15,000 to 1.25 lakh spectators are being developed near the Narendra Modi Stadium. The state is also allocating hotel plots and will soon announce comprehensive policies covering:

  1. Concerts and entertainment events
  2. Expos and exhibitions
  3. Hotel development
  4. Sports stadium-led urban development

The deputy chief minister added that Gujarat is strengthening its sports infrastructure with a focus on creating sustainable ecosystems that keep stadiums viable beyond major tournaments.

Industry Leaders Applaud Gujarat's Vision and Execution

FICCI president Anant Goenka praised Gujarat's approach to building scale in future-ready manufacturing across multiple centres including Dholera, Sanand, and Vadodara. Gokul Jaykrishna, chair of FICCI's Gujarat state council, noted that "the state has consistently turned vision into execution and set benchmarks for the entire country."

Pankaj Patel, chairman of Zydus Group, highlighted the critical importance of research for continued growth. "The only way to grow from where we are today is through dedicated research and innovation," he emphasized, calling for a strong ecosystem that fosters scientific inquiry.

Pranav Adani, director of Adani Enterprises, showcased two landmark projects that demonstrate Gujarat's manufacturing capabilities. The group's copper smelter, with an investment approaching one billion dollars, is set to become the world's largest single-location copper production facility and is nearing operational status. On the clean energy front, Adani pointed to the 30-gigawatt renewable energy project at Khavda near the India-Pakistan border, which at full capacity will represent the world's largest renewable energy production facility.

These developments collectively position Gujarat not just as an economic powerhouse within India, but as a globally competitive destination for advanced manufacturing, digital infrastructure, and sustainable industrial growth.
