Gujarat Adds 7.5GW Renewable Power in 7 Months, Hits 40.69GW Capacity
Gujarat's Renewable Energy Capacity Soars to 40.69GW

In a remarkable surge for clean energy, Gujarat has achieved one of its fastest periods of renewable capacity expansion, adding a substantial 7.5 gigawatts (GW) between April and October 2025. This rapid growth underscores the state's accelerating transition towards green power.

Record Growth in Solar and Wind Power

According to the latest data from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Gujarat's total renewable energy capacity jumped from 33.3 GW as of March 31, 2025, to 40.69 GW by October 31, 2025. This impressive addition is a mix of solar, wind, and other sources.

The breakdown reveals a strong solar and wind foundation. The state now boasts 24.14 GW of solar power capacity and 14.49 GW from wind energy. Industry analysts point to a wave of utility-scale solar park installations and new wind projects as the primary drivers behind this spike.

Policy Push and Infrastructure Drive Momentum

A senior official from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) credited the state government's focused efforts for the breakthrough. "The state govt is working hard towards the 2030 target of 100GW of renewable capacity, and we are fast-tracking projects to get there," the official stated.

The official highlighted proactive measures to resolve developer challenges related to land acquisition and grid connectivity. Furthermore, new policies for hydro, tidal, and pumped storage projects are in the pipeline, aiming to leverage Gujarat's water resources for large-scale energy storage.

Key enablers for this speed include:

  • Rapid project clearances and faster land pooling in hybrid parks.
  • Significant improvements in evacuation infrastructure, clearing a backlog of utility-scale projects.
  • The impact of the revised Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) rules, which streamlined execution.

Market Confidence and Future Outlook

The revised ALMM rules have injected new confidence into the market. Solar energy consultant Jaideep Malaviya noted, "The revised ALMM rules have already encouraged faster project execution, and investor confidence is clearly strengthening as power demand stays bullish across India." He predicted a full-scale boom once ALMM norms for cells are formally notified.

This growth is not just in capacity but also in generation. During the April-October period, Gujarat's total renewable energy generation surged by 30%, from 31.12 million units (MU) in 2024 to 41.17 MU in 2025.

Kunj Shah, Chairman of the RE Committee at Assocham Gujarat Council, pointed to specific catalysts: "Khavda saw some major projects going live over the past 6-8 months. Moreover, the Gujarat RE Policy 2023's benefits began trickling in since Feb onwards." He also praised GUVNL's move to ease application clearances through its online portal.

With clearer tariff visibility, faster grid approvals, and rising demand for round-the-clock green contracts from industries like chemicals and pharmaceuticals, Gujarat solidifies its position among India's top three states for renewable energy capacity addition and generation.
