Gurgaon Pioneers Automated LPG Distribution with First-Ever ATM in NCR

Gurgaon has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the inaugural city in the National Capital Region to deploy an LPG ATM, a cutting-edge smart vending machine capable of dispensing a lightweight gas cylinder in a mere two to three minutes. This innovative facility, known as the Bharatgas Insta LPG machine, has been strategically installed at Central Park Flower Valley in Sector 33 of Sohna, introducing automated and contactless distribution to a residential township. The launch comes at a critical juncture when LPG supply is constrained, and consumers are actively seeking faster and more efficient refill alternatives to traditional methods.

Advanced Features and Operational Mechanics

According to officials, the machine dispenses composite LPG cylinders, which are notably lighter, cleaner, and easier to handle compared to conventional iron cylinders. While traditional cylinders weigh approximately 31 kilograms in total, including 14 kilograms of gas, the fibre-based composite version reduces the weight to around 15 kilograms while maintaining the same gas quantity. Additionally, the transparent body of these cylinders allows users to visually monitor the gas level with ease, enhancing safety and convenience.

The refill process is entirely automated and streamlined for user-friendliness. A consumer with a registered Bharatgas composite cylinder connection initiates the transaction by entering a mobile number, verifying it through a one-time password (OTP), and scanning the barcode or QR code on the empty cylinder. Payment is completed digitally via UPI or debit card, followed by a digital eligibility check. Upon approval, the machine releases a filled cylinder and securely stores the empty one inside, ensuring a seamless and hygienic experience.

Current Usage and Future Prospects

Officials revealed that the ATM, which was installed on March 6, has a capacity to hold up to 10 cylinders simultaneously. An automated alert system notifies the nearest gas agency when stock dwindles to two cylinders, prompting timely replenishment. However, since its launch, only four cylinders have been dispensed, primarily due to limited public awareness about the facility. An official emphasized the benefits of composite cylinders, stating they are "easier to carry, safer to use, and better in appearance because they are dust-free and corrosion-free." Consumers also have the option to exchange a regular cylinder for a composite one directly at the machine.

Resident Feedback and Broader Implications

Residents have expressed enthusiasm for the machine, highlighting its ability to liberate them from rigid delivery schedules. Rajiv Kumar, a resident of Central Park, shared that the innovation has significantly enhanced daily convenience. "Earlier, we had to plan refills in advance and wait for delivery. Now, a cylinder can be collected in a few minutes at any time. The 24x7 access and simple digital process are especially useful for working families," he added.

This rollout is part of a limited pilot program by BPCL to test automated LPG dispensing in select locations. A company spokesperson explained that the machine reflects BPCL's commitment to leveraging technology to improve convenience and accessibility. "We want to offer a quick and reliable refill experience, while also encouraging the use of efficient composite cylinders," the spokesperson noted. Officials assured that the facility is permanent and will continue operations even after the current supply shortages ease, signaling a long-term shift towards modernized LPG distribution.
