Hyderabad's Begumpet Airport Underpass Receives Official Approval from Airports Authority
The Telangana state government has successfully obtained crucial permission from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to construct a pioneering multi-lane underpass that will run directly beneath the operational Begumpet Airport runway. This ambitious infrastructure component forms an integral part of a larger elevated corridor project designed to seamlessly connect Suchitra Junction with Paradise Circle, significantly enhancing urban mobility.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy formally announced this development during a session in the legislative council on Monday, marking a substantial step forward for Hyderabad's transportation network. The underpass initiative, originally conceptualized by the state administration in 2024, represents a groundbreaking engineering feat within the country's infrastructure landscape.
A Vision for Efficient Urban Mobility and Global Competitiveness
"This is a unique and first-of-its-kind infrastructure initiative in India. Our primary objective is to minimize the time motorists spend waiting at traffic signals, thereby creating a smoother and more efficient travel experience," stated CM Revanth Reddy during the question hour. He emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to transforming Hyderabad into a more livable, efficient, and globally competitive metropolis while meticulously preserving its rich historical identity and cultural heritage.
Drawing pointed comparisons to the severe pollution and chronic traffic congestion plaguing major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, the Chief Minister articulated a clear vision to prevent Hyderabad from following a similar detrimental path. He outlined an ambitious and comprehensive roadmap for Hyderabad's holistic development, anchored by the overarching 'Telangana Rising 2047' vision, which prioritizes massive infrastructure expansion, systematic traffic decongestion, and sustainable urban planning principles.
Comprehensive Development Strategy: From Roads to Rail and Governance
To realize this transformative vision, the state government has formulated a multi-pronged strategy. Key action points include the planned relocation of industrial units situated beyond the Outer Ring Road (ORR), the extensive construction of a modern network comprising roads, underpasses, and elevated corridors, and the decisive clearing of encroachments along pedestrian pavements to restore public spaces.
"We have strategically categorized road development into three distinct segments: underpasses, surface roads, and elevated corridors. Development works for roads and elevated corridors are slated to commence at 29 identified locations across the city," explained the Chief Minister. He further highlighted the Hyderabad Industrial Lands Transformation (HILT) policy, a proactive measure aimed at mitigating air pollution by reclassifying land from traditional industrial zones to versatile multi-use zones.
Enhancing the city's livability quotient remains a central focus. Plans are underway to establish dedicated, organized zones for street vendors, construct multi-level parking facilities to alleviate parking chaos, and aggressively pursue the expansion of the metro rail network to bolster last-mile connectivity. A new automated multi-level rotary parking facility near KBR Park is already operational, with several similar projects planned throughout Hyderabad.
Strengthening Transport Systems and the Musi River Rejuvenation
The government is placing significant emphasis on strengthening the core traffic and transport systems, with particular attention to the road and railway networks. Upgradation works for Secunderabad and Cherlapally railway stations are currently in progress. Furthermore, the state is progressing towards assuming control of metro rail operations by the end of March or in April, with the Central government reportedly responding positively to proposals for network expansion.
Addressing the monumental Musi river rejuvenation project, CM Revanth Reddy assured that the government would ensure not a single individual is rendered homeless due to the initiative. An elevated corridor, planned to run through the city's heart alongside the Musi river from Gandipet to Gourelli, is expected to drastically reduce travel time along this critical 40-kilometer stretch.
Call for Collaborative Governance and Opposition Cooperation
Highlighting a shift towards 'Smart Governance', the Chief Minister detailed efforts to foster transparency and improve inter-departmental coordination. Administrative efficiency has been bolstered by reorganizing Hyderabad into three municipal corporations and four police commissionerates.
In a direct appeal for bipartisan collaboration on development, CM Revanth Reddy urged opposition parties to refrain from politicizing vital infrastructure initiatives and instead contribute constructive suggestions. He cited the successful Sabarmati riverfront project in Gujarat, which flourished under a Congress mayor and BJP leadership, as a model of developmental cooperation transcending political differences.
"If the opposition feels uncomfortable submitting suggestions directly to me, the state government is prepared to constitute a cabinet sub-committee, led by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, specifically for the Musi project. Political differences should not hinder progress; we seek your cooperation and valuable input," the Chief Minister concluded, reinforcing his administration's dedication to inclusive and accelerated urban development for Hyderabad's future.
