PNG Demand in Hyderabad Soars Amid LPG Crunch, BGL Expands Rapidly
Hyderabad PNG Demand Surges as LPG Supply Tightens

Hyderabad Experiences Surge in PNG Demand Amid LPG Supply Disruptions

In Hyderabad, the ongoing conflict in West Asia has triggered a significant crunch in LPG supply, leading to a remarkable surge in demand for piped natural gas (PNG). Bhagyanagar Gas Limited (BGL), a key provider in the city, has reported a four-fold increase in new users as consumers seek alternative fuel options.

Rapid Growth in New Connections

Until February, BGL was adding barely 10 new users per day. However, over the past month, this number has skyrocketed, with nearly 2,000 new consumers opting for PNG connections. This translates to an average of over 50 new users every day, highlighting a sharp shift in consumer preferences driven by the LPG shortage.

Accelerated Expansion Plans

Buoyed by this surge in demand and with all necessary approvals from the state government now in place, BGL is accelerating its expansion efforts. The company plans to add around 200 new connections daily and aims to cross the one-lakh consumer mark by the end of the year by onboarding an additional 20,000 users. This ambitious target reflects the growing reliance on PNG as a stable energy source.

Residential Communities Drive Interest

The rising interest in PNG is particularly evident among residential communities. Several housing societies have approached BGL seeking connections, with work already underway in two high-rise residential complexes in Madhapur. Within the next two weeks, connections will be provided to approximately 600 flats, showcasing the rapid deployment of infrastructure to meet demand.

Government Support Fast-Tracks Clearances

Previously, expansion efforts were hampered by delays in approvals and coordination challenges involving multiple departments, especially for tasks like road excavation, pipeline installation, and in-building connections. A BGL official stated, "The state government has now instructed all relevant departments to fast-track pending clearances and support the rapid development of PNG infrastructure, which is set to further accelerate new connections." This governmental intervention is crucial for streamlining operations and enhancing service delivery.

Current Operations and Future Expansion

Currently, BGL's operations are concentrated in areas such as Bachupally, Chandanagar, BHEL, Gachibowli, Lingampally, Miyapur, and Kothaguda, along with pockets like Kompally and Shamirpet. However, the company plans to expand its network further, extending services to areas like Katedan and reaching eastern localities such as LB Nagar within a year. This expansion aims to broaden access to PNG across Hyderabad.

Challenges and Consumer Behavior

Despite pipelines being laid to serve over 2.15 lakh households in apartments and gated communities, only about 84,000 homes are actively using PNG. Officials note that in many cases, builders have not completed the necessary internal connections to kitchens. Additionally, government subsidies on LPG continue to influence some households to stick with traditional fuel options, presenting ongoing challenges for PNG adoption.

This shift towards PNG in Hyderabad underscores the impact of global events on local energy markets and highlights efforts to enhance infrastructure resilience. With continued government support and expanding networks, PNG is poised to play a larger role in the city's energy landscape.
