Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam Expressway Nears Completion, Cuts Travel Time

New Expressway Between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Set to Revolutionize Regional Travel

A major infrastructure project that will dramatically reshape transportation across the Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam corridor is rapidly approaching completion. The 162-kilometer access-controlled greenfield expressway, stretching from Khammam to Devarapalle, represents a significant engineering achievement and promises to transform travel between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Project Specifications and Strategic Importance

This ambitious highway project, being constructed by the National Highways Authority of India under the flagship Bharatmala Pariyojana, will become Telangana's first such expressway corridor upon opening. The four-lane project runs from Thallampadu to Devarapalle and has been strategically divided into five construction packages, with 105.24 kilometers located in Telangana and 56.89 kilometers in Andhra Pradesh.

The new alignment is expected to deliver substantial travel benefits, cutting the Rajahmundry-Hyderabad distance by 56 kilometers and shortening the Khammam-Devarapalle stretch by 24 kilometers. These distance reductions are projected to potentially decrease travel time by an impressive two to four hours, offering a faster and safer alternative to currently congested routes.

Engineering Challenges and Infrastructure Features

With an estimated cost of approximately ₹3,700 crore, this corridor represents three years of intensive large-scale engineering and land development work. The project team created extensive infrastructure along the Telangana stretch alone, including dozens of major bridges and over 170 culverts designed to span rivers, streams, and local crossings.

The expressway incorporates controlled entry and exit points through interchanges, along with truck lay-bys, rest areas, toll plazas, and ramp connections specifically engineered to ensure smooth high-speed movement. Beyond basic connectivity, the highway will feature solar-powered lighting, landscaped medians, emergency access points, and modern traffic management systems.

Overcoming Significant Implementation Hurdles

The project's journey from conception to near-completion involved overcoming substantial challenges. Originally conceived in 2017 as a plan to widen existing two-lane roads over approximately 182 kilometers, approval was granted a year later for a completely new greenfield alignment through largely uninhabited terrain.

Land acquisition emerged as one of the most significant obstacles, with 554 hectares acquired in Telangana alone. Compensation disputes initially slowed progress but were eventually resolved through arbitration. Engineers also confronted a shortage of suitable soil and innovatively used fly ash as an alternative construction material.

Additional challenges included relocating 17 high-tension power lines and working through two years of heavy rainfall and flooding conditions. Despite these substantial hurdles, construction teams have already completed 116 kilometers of the expressway, with the remaining stretch targeted for completion by May.

Regional Impact and Future Significance

This transformative infrastructure project will significantly ease traffic pressure on busy highways such as NH-65 and NH-16 while positioning itself as a major transport spine between the two states. The expressway represents more than just a road—it's a comprehensive transportation solution that will enhance regional connectivity along the vital Hyderabad-Visakhapatnam axis.

The completion of this expressway marks a milestone in India's infrastructure development, demonstrating how strategic planning and engineering innovation can overcome geographical and logistical challenges to create transportation corridors that benefit entire regions.
