In a significant boost to India's electronics manufacturing ambitions, the government has given the green light to seven new state-of-the-art electronic component manufacturing plants under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECS). The announcement was made by Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, marking a crucial step forward in strengthening the country's electronics ecosystem.
Massive Investment and Employment Generation
The newly approved projects are set to bring in substantial investments totaling approximately ₹700 crore while creating over 5,000 new employment opportunities across the country. This development comes as part of India's broader strategy to reduce import dependency and establish itself as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
Diverse Component Manufacturing Focus
The seven plants will specialize in manufacturing critical electronic components that form the backbone of various electronic devices. The production will include:
- Advanced printed circuit boards (PCBs)
- Specialized sensors for automotive and industrial applications
- Precision mechanical components for mobile devices
- High-quality connectors and cables
- Display sub-assemblies and touch panels
Strengthening the Complete Electronics Value Chain
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that these new facilities will play a pivotal role in creating a robust component manufacturing ecosystem within India. "This is not just about assembling finished products anymore. We are building the complete value chain - from components to sub-assemblies to final products," the Minister stated.
Aligning with Broader Manufacturing Initiatives
The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme works in synergy with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing. This integrated approach has already yielded impressive results, with mobile phone production in India skyrocketing from ₹1.8 lakh crore to an impressive ₹4.1 lakh crore within the last few years.
Export Potential and Global Competitiveness
The newly established component manufacturing units are expected to not only cater to domestic demand but also position India as a significant exporter of electronic components. This move aligns perfectly with the government's vision of achieving $300 billion in electronics manufacturing by 2025-26.
