In a landmark development for India's defence and maritime sectors, Mumbai-based Sagar Defence Engineering has officially commenced the construction of the world's inaugural Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Centre. The foundation stone was laid on Thursday at the Juvvaladinne fishing harbour in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant stride in enhancing the nation's indigenous defence capabilities and technological prowess.

Strategic Location and Government Support

The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated 29.58 acres of land at the fishing harbour in Nellore district for this ambitious project. This strategic location provides direct sea access, facilitating seamless vessel construction, launch, testing, and deployment. The initiative aligns perfectly with the state government's vision to fortify India's marine technology ecosystem and cultivate advanced manufacturing capabilities along its extensive coastline.

Cutting-Edge Technologies and Innovations

The centre will be dedicated to the research, development, and production of a range of advanced maritime platforms and systems. Key focus areas include:

  • Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs)
