India Cuts Fertilizer Imports: 73% Domestic Production in 2025
India Meets 73% Fertilizer Need Domestically in 2025

In a significant stride towards agricultural self-sufficiency, the Indian government has dramatically reduced the nation's reliance on imported fertilizers. Official data reveals that in the recently concluded year of 2025, a remarkable 73 per cent of the country's total fertilizer requirement was fulfilled by domestic production. This marks a pivotal achievement in the government's mission to empower farmers and ensure a stable supply of critical agricultural inputs.

A Five-Year Surge in Domestic Output

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers attributes this landmark success to sustained, focused efforts over the past five years. The data shows a consistent and impressive upward trajectory in the production of key fertilizers including Urea, DAP, NPKs, and SSP. Domestic output has climbed steadily from 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021 to 467.87 lakh tonnes in 2022. The growth continued, reaching 507.93 lakh tonnes in 2023 and 509.57 lakh tonnes in 2024. The year 2025 witnessed an acceleration, with production hitting an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes.

"This sustained growth reflects the robustness of India's fertiliser manufacturing ecosystem and the effectiveness of Government interventions," stated the Ministry. It emphasized that this achievement is a direct result of proactive policy initiatives designed to strengthen the sector and bolster the agricultural economy.

Strategic Moves Behind the Success

To secure fertilizer availability and shield farmers from global market volatilities, the government implemented a multi-pronged strategy. A core focus has been on ensuring fertiliser security and the timely availability of nutrients to farmers across the country. Key measures include prioritizing long-term supply agreements for crucial raw materials and adopting a strategy of strategic diversification of sources. This approach safeguards against international supply chain disruptions and price shocks.

The growth in production capacity has been driven by concrete actions on the ground:

  • Establishment of new fertilizer manufacturing plants.
  • Revival and modernization of previously shut-down units.
  • Active promotion of indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
  • Ensuring an assured and consistent supply of raw materials for production.

Pathway to an Atmanirbhar Agricultural Economy

The government has reiterated its commitment to building on this success. The focus remains on further strengthening domestic fertilizer security, supporting farmers with timely and affordable inputs, and promoting sustainable agricultural growth. This entire initiative is aligned with the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), aiming to reduce external dependencies in critical sectors.

By boosting domestic production to meet nearly three-fourths of the national demand, India has not only enhanced its agricultural resilience but also taken a major step towards insulating its vast farming community from the uncertainties of the global fertilizer market. The continued efforts signal a firm commitment to building a self-reliant and prosperous agricultural foundation for the nation.
