India's Sugar Production Surges 18.35% to 19.50 Million Tonnes in 2025-26 Season
India Sugar Output Up 18.35% to 19.50 Million Tonnes

India's sugar production has witnessed a significant surge of 18.35 per cent, reaching 19.50 million tonnes till January 31 of the ongoing 2025-26 season, according to the latest data released by the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA). This marks a substantial increase from the 16.47 million tonnes recorded during the same period in the previous season, highlighting robust growth in the sector.

Key States Drive Production Growth

The impressive rise in sugar output is primarily attributed to higher production in India's key sugar-producing states. Maharashtra, the country's largest sugar producer, has led the charge with a remarkable 42 per cent increase in production, reaching 7.87 million tonnes as of January 31. The state currently has 206 operational sugar mills, up from 190 mills a year ago, indicating expanded crushing capacity.

Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka Show Steady Gains

Uttar Pradesh, India's second-largest sugar producer, has also contributed significantly to the overall growth. Sugar output in the state reached 5.51 million tonnes so far, reflecting a steady increase of around 5 per cent compared to last year. This growth has been supported by consistent crushing operations across the region.

Karnataka, the third-largest producer, has recorded improved crushing momentum, with sugar production increasing by approximately 15 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous season. The combined efforts of these states have bolstered India's sugar output, reinforcing the country's position as a major global producer.

Operational Mills and Season Overview

Currently, 515 sugar mills are operational across the country, slightly higher than the 501 mills in operation at the same stage last year. The sugar season in India typically runs from October to September, and the current data reflects strong performance in the initial months of the 2025-26 season.

Projections for the Full Season

ISMA has projected that net sugar production for the 2025-26 season will increase by 18.6 per cent to 30.95 million tonnes, up from 26.1 million tonnes in the previous season. This optimistic forecast underscores the positive trends observed in the early part of the season and points to a potentially record-breaking output by the end of the cycle.

The growth in sugar production is a positive indicator for India's agricultural and economic sectors, potentially impacting domestic supply, export opportunities, and related industries. Stakeholders will be closely monitoring the progress as the season continues to unfold.
