India's Electronics Manufacturing Soars: ₹4 Trillion Investment Unleashed Under PLI Scheme
India's Electronics Manufacturing Soars with ₹4 Trillion Investment

India's electronics manufacturing landscape is undergoing a revolutionary transformation, with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing achieving spectacular results. According to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the initiative has catalyzed investments worth approximately ₹4 trillion, creating around 1.5 lakh new employment opportunities.

Mobile Manufacturing: The Crown Jewel of India's Electronics Revolution

The mobile phone manufacturing sector has emerged as the standout success story, with production skyrocketing from an estimated ₹18,900 crore in 2014-15 to a staggering ₹4.1 trillion in 2023-24. This represents an extraordinary growth of over 2,100%, positioning India as a global manufacturing powerhouse.

"We have crossed ₹4.1 trillion worth of production in mobile manufacturing," declared Minister Vaishnaw, highlighting the sector's phenomenal expansion. The export figures are equally impressive, surging from ₹1,556 crore to an estimated ₹1.3 trillion during the same period.

Component Manufacturing: Building the Foundation for Self-Reliance

The government has now turned its focus to strengthening the electronics components ecosystem, approving a dedicated PLI scheme for this critical segment. This strategic move aims to reduce import dependency and create a comprehensive manufacturing value chain within the country.

Key components targeted under the new scheme include:

  • Electromechanical components
  • Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)
  • Active and passive components
  • Semiconductors and display assemblies
  • Memory and storage devices

IT Hardware Manufacturing Gains Momentum

The PLI scheme for IT hardware has also shown remarkable progress, with companies approved under the initiative projected to manufacture goods worth ₹4.65 trillion. This includes significant exports estimated at ₹3.28 trillion, demonstrating India's growing competitiveness in the global market.

Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the entire electronics manufacturing ecosystem is expanding at an unprecedented pace, with companies increasingly choosing India as their preferred manufacturing destination.

Employment Generation: Creating Opportunities Across Skill Levels

The employment impact of these initiatives extends across various skill levels:

  1. Direct employment in manufacturing facilities
  2. Indirect employment in supply chain and logistics
  3. Skilled jobs in research and development
  4. Opportunities in quality control and testing

This comprehensive approach to job creation ensures that the benefits of electronics manufacturing growth reach diverse segments of the workforce.

Future Outlook: India's Position in Global Electronics Value Chain

With these ambitious initiatives, India is rapidly transforming from being primarily an assembly hub to becoming a comprehensive manufacturing destination. The focus on component manufacturing represents a crucial step toward achieving true self-reliance in electronics production.

The success of these schemes underscores India's potential to become a global electronics manufacturing leader, contributing significantly to the government's vision of making India a $5 trillion economy and establishing the country as a vital link in the global electronics supply chain.
