Domestic passenger vehicle sales jump 24.6% in June
India's domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales increased by 24.6% year-on-year (YoY) to over 400,000 units in June, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The growth was driven by income tax relief, repo rate cuts, and robust rural demand, even as the West Asia conflict pushed global crude oil prices higher, increasing vehicle costs.
Maruti Suzuki retains top spot
Maruti Suzuki India maintained its market leadership with domestic passenger car sales rising 23.7% YoY to 147,187 units. The entry-level models Alto and S-Presso saw a 78% surge to 11,416 units, reflecting broad-based growth. The small car portfolio, including Baleno, Swift, Dzire, WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, and Ciaz, increased by 15.6% to 63,815 units. SUV sales, including Brezza, Fronx, Grand Vitara, e Vitara, Ertiga, Jimny, Invicto, Victoris, and XL6, grew 28.7% to 61,726 units. The Eeco MPV saw a 9.5% rise to 10,230 units. SUVs remained the largest growth driver for the company.
Tata Motors becomes second-largest PV manufacturer
Tata Motors emerged as the second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, with domestic wholesales of 62,076 units, a 67% YoY increase. Overall passenger car sales, including exports, rose 69% to 63,083 units. Despite a strong booking pipeline, the company reported that production of the Sierra was hindered by localized supply issues. Electric vehicles (EVs) continued to gain traction, with combined domestic and export dispatches reaching a monthly high of 14,800 units, up from 5,228 units a year earlier, accounting for 23.4% of total passenger vehicle sales.
Mahindra & Mahindra crosses 60,000 SUV sales
Mahindra & Mahindra recorded 60,393 domestic SUV sales in June, up 28% from the previous year, contributing to a 37% increase in total vehicle sales to 106,207 units. For the first time, domestic passenger vehicle sales exceeded 60,000 units in a month, rising 4.1% from 58,021 units in May.
Hyundai Motor India sales drop due to supply disruption
Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 39,635 units, down approximately 10% YoY, after a fire at a supplier's manufacturing facility disrupted the supply of essential components, resulting in a production loss of about 13,900 units. The company said alternate sourcing has been initiated to stabilize production.
