IndiGo Makes History: Flies Over 1 Crore Passengers Monthly in 2025
IndiGo Flies 12.3 Crore Passengers in 2025

IndiGo, India's largest airline, has achieved an unprecedented milestone in the country's aviation history. For the first time, an Indian carrier flew over one crore (10 million) passengers every single month throughout a calendar year. This remarkable feat was accomplished in 2025, a year that also tested the airline's operational resilience.

Record Traffic Amidst Operational Challenges

Despite facing a significant operational disruption in early December 2025, IndiGo managed to transport more than 12.3 crore passengers during the calendar year. This marks a substantial increase from the 11.3 crore passengers it carried in 2024. The airline acknowledged the challenges, stating the operating environment presented industry-wide difficulties, including its own major disruption from December 3 to 5, 2025.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the airline extended a profuse apology to its customers impacted by the December schedule collapse. It emphasized that operations were rapidly restored to normal and that the focus remains on strengthening processes to prevent future occurrences. IndiGo confirmed it is fully cooperating with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) probe committee by providing all requested information, while the aviation ministry examines the regulator's report.

Aggressive Network Expansion and Future Plans

The year 2025 was pivotal for IndiGo's growth strategy. The airline aggressively expanded its network, launching services to 10 new international destinations and adding 30 new international routes. Key long-haul launches included non-stop connections from India to Manchester, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and London.

By the end of the year, IndiGo's network spanned a total of 139 destinations – 97 within India and 42 international. On average, the airline operated over 2,200 flights daily, flying more than one million customers every three days. It also transported over 55,000 tonnes of cargo in CY 2025.

The airline is poised for further transformation in the new year with the arrival of its long-haul Airbus A321 XLR (Extra Long Range) aircraft. The international debut of India's first A321XLR is set for January 23, 2026, with the launch of non-stop flights to Athens, unlocking new medium-to-long-haul market potential.

Leadership Reflects on Growth and Lessons

IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, reflected on the year's journey, describing 2025 as a period of taking big strides in executing the airline's strategy. He stated the airline is advancing to the next phase of becoming a major global carrier.

"As we step into the New Year, there's opportunity to reflect on the story so far, take stock of the progress made and learn from the operational challenges we encountered," Elbers said. He added that this point in the journey calls for a renewed focus on scale, innovation, and impact, with customers remaining at the core.

To ensure systemic improvements, IndiGo has engaged external experts to conduct a deep dive into the causes of the December disruption, aiming to build robust safeguards against a repeat. The airline's statement concluded with a commitment to build on the current momentum and continue its growth trajectory into the future.
