Indore Milk Prices to Increase by Rs 3 per Litre Starting April 1
The Indore Dugdh Vikreta Sangh has announced a significant price hike for milk, with consumers in the city set to pay Rs 3 more per litre from Wednesday, April 1. This adjustment follows a meeting of milk suppliers held on March 31, where rising input costs and supply-side pressures were thoroughly discussed.
Revised Pricing Structure
Following the revision, milk delivered at doorsteps will now cost Rs 63 per litre, while loose milk sold at dairy outlets will be priced at Rs 65 per litre. This marks the first price increase in over a year, with the last revision occurring on March 1, 2025, when rates were raised by Rs 2 per litre.
Reasons Behind the Hike
Association president Bharat Mathurawala explained that the hike is necessary to sustain the milk supply chain amid escalating costs. "Fodder prices have increased sharply over the past few months. The cost of purchasing and maintaining cattle has also risen significantly. As these expenses have been steadily climbing, making a revision was inevitable," he stated. The revision aims to ensure that milk producers receive a fair price and can continue supply without disruption.
Impact on Producers and Supply
The association highlighted that this move will benefit approximately 1.5 lakh milk producers in the Indore district, as they will receive higher returns based on fat content. Better price realisation at the producer level is deemed crucial for maintaining consistent supply in the city. Currently, daily milk collection in Indore ranges from 12 to 12.5 lakh litres, while total daily consumption stands at about 12.5 to 13 lakh litres. With demand expected to rise, sales are projected to reach 14 lakh litres in the coming months.
This price adjustment reflects broader economic pressures in the dairy sector, emphasizing the need for sustainable pricing to support local producers and meet growing consumer demand.
