In Lucknow, growing apprehension about potential LPG cylinder shortages has triggered a significant shift in cooking preferences, with residents and businesses rapidly adopting induction cooktops and electric cookers as reliable alternatives. This sudden change in consumer behavior has created an unprecedented surge in demand for these appliances across the city.
Retailers Report Unprecedented Sales Figures
Local shopkeepers have documented a dramatic increase in both enquiries and actual sales of induction stoves over the past several days. Nazeerabad shopkeeper Mukesh Agarwal revealed, "These appliances previously remained unsold for extended periods, but in just the last two days, I have sold approximately 100 units, with induction cooktops being the predominant choice." Another retailer expressed astonishment at the turnaround, noting, "We typically sold a maximum of two induction cooktops per month, but now customers are forming queues to purchase them."
Wholesale Market Experiences Similar Pressure
The demand surge extends to wholesale levels as well. Pawan Manocha, wholesale trader and General Secretary of the Lucknow Vyapar Mandal, reported, "Over the past couple of days, we have sold 111 appliances, including 95 induction sets." He highlighted a critical supply chain vulnerability, explaining, "Manufacturing and supply volumes for induction cooktops are inherently limited. Most units arrive through Delhi markets, with many imported from China, meaning suppliers maintain constrained inventories. If the current purchasing pace persists, the market could soon confront shortages of induction cooktops themselves."
City-Wide Retail Confirmation of Demand Spike
Electronic appliance retailers throughout Lucknow have corroborated this sudden market shift. Faizabad road retailer Nitin Agarwal observed that customer enquiries have multiplied several times over. "We are now receiving 8 to 10 enquiries daily and are beginning to experience shortages of induction stoves," he stated. Jatin Johar, owner of two retail franchises, added, "From our stores alone, we sold around 40 units in the last two days."
Further evidence comes from Vikas Singh, a staff member at an electronics store in Aliganj, who noted over 40 induction cooktops sold in two days, with shortages even at the wholesale level. Amit Singh, a household goods retailer operating both offline and online, described the situation: "We are fielding calls almost every hour from customers inquiring about induction cooktop availability."
Residents and Businesses Seek Cooking Continuity
The driving force behind this trend is the desire for uninterrupted daily cooking. Ritu Srivastava, a school teacher from Indiranagar, explained her purchase: "I bought an induction cooktop as a backup to avoid risking daily meal preparation. Even if the LPG situation improves, this appliance will remain a useful alternative."
Anil Verma, a medical representative residing in Gomti Nagar, shared a similar motivation: "I purchased an induction stove on Tuesday due to increased waiting periods for LPG cylinders. My frequent work travel necessitates a disruption-free cooking routine." Advocate Nitin Mathur observed widespread adoption in his area, stating, "Many people are buying induction cooktops to ensure they have an alternative readily available."
Restaurant Industry Exploring Backup Options
The commercial food sector is also proactively assessing alternatives. Anil Virmani, Chairman of the Lucknow Vyapar Mandal and owner of a restaurant chain, emphasized the importance of continuity: "With reports of LPG shortages and supply uncertainty, food industry participants are investigating alternative cooking devices. We are evaluating induction stoves and other electric cooking options as backups to prevent kitchen operation disruptions if the situation persists. For restaurants, uninterrupted cooking is essential, making an alternative system a prudent precaution."
