Japan-backed jaggery plant starts ops in Ghazipur, UP

A state-of-the-art jaggery-based food product manufacturing plant, established by Power Crops Food and Agri Pvt Ltd, has commenced commercial operations in Gosandepur village, Karanda block, Ghazipur district. This project was initiated under the GBC-4 framework through Invest UP and represents a significant milestone in India-Japan industrial cooperation.

Investment and Collaboration

Set up with an investment of Rs 15 crore, the plant has received technical collaboration and foreign direct investment from Japan’s Nippon Pharmaceutical Co Ltd. Officials highlighted that this venture underscores the growing confidence of domestic and international investors in Uttar Pradesh, attributed to improved law and order and industry-friendly policies under the Yogi government.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

Ghazipur was chosen due to its traditional association with sugarcane cultivation. District Magistrate Anupam Shukla noted that improved connectivity, better industrial infrastructure, and reliable power supply in the Purvanchal region have accelerated industrial growth. The plant will soon receive an industrial connection from a 33 KVA feeder, and plans are underway to establish a 33/11 KV substation near the unit to ensure uninterrupted power supply and boost production capacity.

Employment and Economic Impact

The project has already generated direct employment for over 200 people, while more than 2,000 indirect jobs have been created in transport, packaging, and supply chain activities. This is expected to boost local trade and services. Additionally, efforts have begun to revive sugarcane cultivation within a 50-kilometer radius of the plant, which has a production capacity of around 50 metric tonnes per day. The plant is anticipated to significantly increase local demand for sugarcane, providing farmers with a stronger market.

Products and Exports

Using Japanese technology, the plant manufactures jaggery-based powder, cubes, and health snacks under the brand “Power27 Super Jaggery.” These products are available in flavors such as chocolate, cardamom, fennel, and moringa and are promoted as healthier alternatives to refined sugar. Company officials confirmed that products are already being exported to Japan, Thailand, and Gulf countries. Future plans include processing pesticide-free sugarcane and manufacturing products directly from sugarcane juice.

Government Support

Company chairman Shyam Lal Singh praised the state government’s transparent procedures, administrative support, and investor-friendly environment, which enabled rapid execution of the project. District Magistrate Shukla called the plant a milestone for Purvanchal’s industrial growth, stating it will help revive sugarcane farming in Ghazipur and reduce migration by generating local employment opportunities.
