Kanpur's PNG Network Sees Major Expansion with Over 1.31 Lakh Domestic Connections
In a significant development for Kanpur's energy infrastructure, city officials have disclosed that the PNG (Piped Natural Gas) network now boasts an impressive 1.31 lakh domestic connections, alongside 460 commercial and 152 industrial connections. The revelation came during a high-level meeting chaired by Additional District Magistrate (City) Rajesh Kumar, focused on accelerating the expansion of PNG services across the region.
Steady Weekly Connection Releases and Infrastructure Projects
A senior manager from CUGL (City Gas Utility Limited) provided detailed insights into the current operational tempo. "We are consistently releasing approximately 350 to 400 domestic connections, seven to 11 commercial connections, and about one industrial connection every week," the manager stated. This steady pace underscores the growing demand and systematic rollout of PNG in Kanpur.
Infrastructure development is keeping pace with this demand. A crucial gas pipeline has been successfully laid from Rama Devi to Kalyanpur, enhancing connectivity and capacity. Consumers experiencing issues are advised to contact CUGL offices located in Juhi and Lakhanpur for prompt resolution.
Streamlined Application Process and IGL's Parallel Growth
The application process for commercial connections has been modernized for efficiency. Businesses can now submit their requests online via the official portal www.cugl.co.in. A fixed registration fee of ₹3,000 applies, with connections being provided within a commendable 10 days if a pipeline is readily available, or within 30 to 45 days in other cases.
Parallel growth is reported by IGL (Indraprastha Gas Limited). The Head of GA at IGL announced that an extensive 750 km pipeline has been laid from Ruma to Fatehpur. Currently, this network supports 7,667 domestic, 25 commercial, and 5 industrial connections, with a weekly issuance rate of about 20 domestic, one commercial, and one industrial connection. Consumers in this area can apply through www.iglonline.in and contact the PNG station office in Ruma.
Documentation and Operational Directives for Businesses
For hotels, restaurants, and banquet halls seeking PNG connections, officials clarified the essential documentation required:
- GST Registration Certificate
- Valid Food Licence
- Aadhaar Card
- PAN Card
Operators of these establishments present at the meeting were strongly encouraged to transition to PNG gas connections, highlighting the fuel's efficiency and reliability. To further streamline services, officials directed CUGL and IGL to:
- Establish dedicated call centres within their offices.
- Augment human resources to expedite application processing.
- Ensure connections are provided within strictly stipulated timeframes.
Furthermore, hotel and restaurant operators were tasked with fostering mutual coordination. They are expected to prepare a comprehensive list of potential consumers based on pipeline availability and submit it to the concerned gas companies to facilitate targeted expansion.
Oversight and Meeting Participants
To ensure smooth implementation, instructions were issued for any operational problems to be reported directly to the District Supply Officer or the Additional District Magistrate (Civil Supplies). The pivotal meeting saw participation from a wide array of stakeholders, including:
- The ADM (Civil Supplies)
- District Supply Officer
- Assistant Commissioner (Food Safety)
- Representatives from PNG gas companies (CUGL, IGL)
- Gas distributors
- Office-bearers of trade associations
- Operators of hotels and banquet halls
This collaborative effort marks a concerted push to enhance Kanpur's clean energy footprint, improve service delivery, and support local businesses through reliable PNG infrastructure.
