Commuters in Ahmedabad's eastern parts face a major traffic disruption as a key bridge has been shut down for complete reconstruction. Authorities have closed the bridge over the Kharicut Canal in the Machhunagar area of Vatva, effective from today, January 1, 2026.
Bridge Declared Structurally Unsafe
The decision to close the bridge comes after it was declared "structurally unsafe." The existing structure, which spans 23 metres, will now be fully demolished. The Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) will undertake the construction of a new bridge at the same location. The entire project is expected to take six months, with the closure currently slated to last until June 30, 2026.
Major Traffic Diversions in Effect
In an official notification issued by Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G S Malik, detailed traffic diversion plans have been put in place. A significant 200-metre stretch from the Ramol crossroads to Trikampura Patiya will remain completely closed to all vehicles during the construction period.
The police have outlined the following diversion routes:
- Traffic originating from the Vatva GIDC area will be diverted via Ramol Police Chowki, Hathijan Lal Gebi Circle, and then towards Trikampura using alternate roads.
- Vehicles entering Vatva GIDC from outside will be redirected from the Trikampura crossroads towards the GIDC using other internal roads.
Impact on Daily Commute and Local Business
The prolonged closure is anticipated to significantly affect daily travel for thousands of residents, employees, and goods transporters in the industrial Vatva GIDC zone. The area is a hub for small and medium-scale industries, and the bridge served as a crucial link. Commuters are advised to plan for extra travel time and follow the signposted diversion routes strictly to avoid congestion.
This infrastructure renewal project underscores the ongoing development efforts in Gujarat's industrial corridors. While causing temporary inconvenience, the replacement of the unsafe bridge is a necessary step for public safety and long-term connectivity.
In a separate but concurrent infrastructure update related to the Bullet Train project, the Shahibaug underpass in Ahmedabad will also be closed for vehicular movement for a period of 8 days. This highlights the scale of simultaneous infrastructure work currently underway in the city.
