Kochi's Varapuzha Bridge on NH 66 Set for May Opening
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that the new three-lane bridge at Varapuzha, constructed as part of the NH 66 widening project, is scheduled to open for traffic in May 2024. This development marks a significant milestone in the ongoing infrastructure upgrade aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region.
Project Progress and Key Details
According to a senior NHAI official, approximately 70% of the overall widening work for the 26-kilometer stretch has been completed. However, three critical bridges—Varapuzha, Kottappuram, and Moothakunnam—remain the final obstacles. The entire Rs 1,618 crore six-lane expansion project is targeted for completion by August this year.
The Varapuzha bridge, a centerpiece of this stretch, spans 1.03 kilometers and was constructed at a cost of Rs 100 crore. The main structure was finished in a record 604 days, showcasing efficient project execution. Currently, work on the northern approach road is in its final phase, paving the way for the bridge's imminent commissioning.
Innovative Construction and Testing
The bridge employs the balanced cantilever method, an advanced technique ideal for spans exceeding 50 meters. This method involves building segments outward from a central pier, ensuring stability by maintaining an equal number of segments on both sides. Once opposing cantilevers meet at the mid-span, the section is bridged.
"Once the approach roads are ready, we will conduct a rigorous bridge load test," the official stated. This test involves placing heavily loaded specialized vehicles across the spans while sensors monitor structural responses such as vibrations, strains, and deflections to ensure long-term durability and safety.
Infrastructure Impact and Design Features
The new bridge features 26 spans, including a massive 120-meter central span specifically designed to facilitate unobstructed boat traffic on the Periyar River below. This design is crucial as the stretch is used by Kochi Water Metro, SWTD, and local ferries.
Once fully operational, the bridge is expected to alleviate the notorious bottleneck at Varapuzha, where traffic currently struggles on the older two-lane structure. Interestingly, the old bridge was the first balanced cantilever bridge in Kerala when it opened in 2001.
Broader Project Scope
Along the Edappally-Moothakunnam stretch, NHAI is constructing a total of 15 bridges as part of the NH widening. These include seven major and eight minor bridges. All other bridges, except those at Varapuzha, Kottappuram, and Moothakunnam, have been completed, indicating steady progress toward the project's finalization.
This infrastructure upgrade is poised to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and boost regional economic activity by enhancing transportation efficiency on one of Kerala's key national highways.
