Konkan Railway Corporation Reports Robust Financial and Operational Performance
The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), headquartered in Mangaluru, has unveiled an impressive performance report for the last financial year, marked by significant growth in passenger traffic and a record-breaking achievement in ticket-checking revenue. The corporation's revenue from ticket-checking operations soared to an unprecedented Rs 27.5 crore, reflecting enhanced operational efficiency and increased ridership.
Operational Initiatives and Special Train Services
As part of its strategic operational initiatives, KRCL launched the Dev Darshan Special Train, which included six Full Tariff Rate (FTR) services connecting key pilgrimage centers such as Ranjangaon, Ayodhya, and Rameshwaram. This move aimed to cater to the spiritual travel needs of passengers while boosting connectivity.
Throughout the year, KRCL operated a total of 1,400 special trains, comprising 376 Ganpati specials, 185 summer specials, 86 winter specials, 38 FTR services, and 715 other special services. These efforts contributed to the overall increase in passenger traffic and revenue generation.
Freight Efficiency and Infrastructure Upgrades
In the freight segment, KRCL improved efficiency by enhancing the Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) carrying capacity from 50 metric tons to 57 metric tons. Operational efficiency at Madgaon railway station was further optimized by extending the Road-6 line to facilitate locomotive reversal, streamlining train movements.
To modernize maintenance practices, KRCL adopted drone-based track monitoring, a technological innovation that reduces downtime and enhances safety by providing real-time inspections of railway infrastructure.
Accessibility and Station Enhancements
KRCL prioritized accessibility for Divyangjan (differently-abled) passengers by installing ramps, braille signage, and upgraded information boards at stations including Karmali, Thivim, Karwar, Murdeshwar, and Udupi. Additionally, the corporation conducted railway awareness drives for 730 school students to promote safety and education.
Station infrastructure received a major boost with the introduction of executive or AC lounge facilities at 10 stations: Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Thivim, Karmali, Madgaon, Karwar, Mookambika Road-Byndoor, and Udupi. Further upgrades included DigiLocker facilities at Ratnagiri, Thivim, and Udupi, a new foot overbridge at Vaibhavwadi Road, high-level platforms at Kumta and Gokarna, and platform upgradation at Surathkal, Udupi, and Mulki.
Sustainability and Safety Measures
In alignment with environmental goals, KRCL generated 3.6 lakh kilowatt-hours of solar power, resulting in substantial savings of approximately Rs 45.9 lakh. This initiative underscores the corporation's commitment to sustainable practices and reducing its carbon footprint.
On the safety front, KRCL recorded 92 theft cases during the year and successfully recovered stolen assets worth Rs 35.7 lakh. The railway also rescued 90 runaway children, highlighting its role in social responsibility and passenger welfare.
To strengthen safety infrastructure, approximately 2,700 meters of cattle-run-over-prevention fencing was installed in the Karwar and Ratnagiri regions. CCTV surveillance was expanded with new installations at five stations and upgrades at several others, enhancing security and monitoring capabilities across the network.
Leadership and Vision
Santosh Kumar Jha, chairman and managing director of KRCL, commented on the achievements, stating, "This year's accomplishments reflect our dedication to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas through world-class rail infrastructure, in alignment with the vision of the Prime Minister." His remarks emphasize the corporation's alignment with national development goals and its commitment to providing high-quality railway services.
The comprehensive report by KRCL showcases a year of significant progress across multiple fronts, from financial performance and operational efficiency to sustainability and safety, positioning the corporation as a key player in India's railway sector.
