Labour Unrest Escalates in Bulandshahr with Protests Over Wages and Benefits
Labour unrest has spread to Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, as over 100 workers staged a nearly four-hour protest outside TAG Tropical Agrosystems (India) in the Sikandrabad industrial area on Monday. The workers demanded higher wages and basic benefits, highlighting growing dissatisfaction among contract labourers in the region.
Key Demands and Allegations by Workers
The protesting workers raised several critical issues, including:
- Low Pay: They cited inadequate wages as a primary concern.
- Long Working Hours: Workers reported excessive shifts without proper compensation.
- Absence of Benefits: The lack of Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) facilities was a major grievance.
- Harassment by Contractors: Allegations of mistreatment and unfair practices by contractors were also voiced.
Specifically, the workers demanded a minimum monthly wage of ₹15,000 for women and ₹20,000 for men for 12-hour shifts, aiming to address the financial hardships faced by many in the industrial sector.
Administrative Response and Assurance
Senior administrative officials intervened during the protest, assuring the workers that their demands would be addressed in accordance with labour laws. Following this assurance, the workers resumed their duties, indicating a temporary resolution to the immediate unrest.
Assistant Labour Commissioner Pallavi Agarwal stated that the management of TAG Tropical Agrosystems has been directed to submit relevant records for verification. This step is part of an ongoing investigation to ensure compliance with labour regulations and to assess the validity of the workers' claims.
Spread of Unrest to Other Industrial Areas
The protest in Sikandrabad was not an isolated incident. Similar demonstrations were later reported at Vileen Industries Ltd in the same area, as well as across various industrial units in Noida and Greater Noida. This pattern signals a broader wave of unrest among contract workers in the region, who are increasingly vocal about their rights and working conditions.
