LPG Distributors Seek Police Protection Amid Alleged Gas Shortage in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
A group of LPG distributors in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has raised alarms over an alleged shortage of domestic gas supply in the city, prompting them to seek police protection to manage aggressive crowds gathering at various agencies. This development comes as authorities firmly deny any actual shortfall, attributing the situation to consumer panic booking.
Distributors Cite Safety Concerns and Festive Season Pressure
On Friday, a delegation of LPG distributors met with district collector Deelip Swami to formally request security personnel for their premises. The distributors expressed serious concerns about the safety of their staff and customers due to the increasingly volatile behavior at refill centers.
"Crowds have increased significantly due to the festive season," explained one distributor. "Some consumers have become highly aggressive upon being unable to secure an immediate refill. We believe police deployment is necessary to prevent any untoward incidents."
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district currently has 77 registered LPG distributors serving approximately 11.8 lakh consumers, making the management of supply and demand particularly challenging during peak periods.
Government Authorities Deny Shortage, Blame Panic Booking
When contacted, district supply officer (DSO) Pravin Phulari categorically dismissed claims of a genuine shortage. Instead, he pointed to consumer behavior as the primary cause of the apparent crisis.
"Panic booking by several customers has created a false perception of scarcity," Phulari stated. "We have been appealing to consumers since March 5 to register for refills only when necessary and to avoid hoarding."
The DSO specifically identified customers with "double bottle connections" (DBC) as the main drivers behind the surge in bookings. According to official data, the district continues to receive a steady daily supply of approximately 20,130 domestic LPG cylinders, suggesting that distribution rather than availability may be the issue.
Hospitality Industry Renews Demand for Commercial LPG Resumption
Meanwhile, the local hospitality industry has reiterated its longstanding demand for the resumption of commercial LPG supply. Government authorities have clarified that the current suspension of commercial supply represents a policy decision by the Central government.
This policy is reportedly linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, which have created disruptions in the global energy market. The connection to international conflicts adds another layer of complexity to the domestic energy situation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
