Labour Unions Stage Major Protest in Ludhiana Demanding ₹26,000 Minimum Monthly Wage
In a significant display of worker solidarity, two prominent labour unions in Punjab organized a substantial protest at Samrala Chowk in Ludhiana today. The Karkhana Mazdoor Union Punjab and the Textile Hosiery Kamagar Union Punjab gathered under a flyover to voice their demands for improved working conditions and fair compensation.
Nationwide Demands for Better Worker Treatment
The protest was conducted in support of broader demonstrations by labour unions across the country. Participants marched through the area while chanting slogans against government policies they perceive as inadequate for protecting worker interests. Their central demand focused on establishing a universal minimum monthly wage of ₹26,000 for all workers, regardless of sector or skill level.
Lakhwinder Singh, president of Karkhana Mazdoor Union, addressed the gathering with a powerful message about worker unity. "Workers must come together across the nation to fight for our legitimate demands," he declared. Singh urgently called upon government authorities to listen to labour concerns and implement substantial improvements to salaries, wages, and workplace facilities.
Solidarity with Workers Across India
Protesters expressed strong solidarity with labour demonstrations occurring in other regions of India. They voiced particular frustration about the treatment of workers in various states, highlighting what they described as systemic neglect of labour rights. Many participants shared personal accounts of economic hardship exacerbated by insufficient wages that fail to keep pace with rising inflation.
Workers detailed challenging employment conditions they regularly face:
- Mandatory long working hours with threats of termination for refusing overtime
- Seven-day work weeks without additional compensation
- Inadequate wages that don't cover basic living expenses
- Limited access to proper workplace facilities and benefits
The protest at Samrala Chowk represents a growing movement among Indian workers seeking fundamental improvements to their economic circumstances and working environments. As labour unions continue to organize across state lines, these demonstrations signal increasing pressure on policymakers to address wage disparities and worker protections nationwide.
