Mahalaxmi Saras 2026 Exhibition Inaugurated in Nagpur, Showcasing Rural Maharashtra's Rich Offerings
The vibrant flavors and crafts of rural Maharashtra have made a grand entry into Nagpur with the inauguration of the state-level Mahalaxmi Saras 2026 exhibition at Reshimbagh ground on Tuesday. This event, running until March 23, presents a diverse array of products, from year-long talmali flower garlands and mushroom pickles to millet breads and export-quality grapes, offering city dwellers a taste of the countryside's finest.
Organizational Framework and Event Highlights
Organized by the rural development and Panchayat Raj department, in collaboration with the 'Umed Mission' and Nagpur Zilla Parishad, the exhibition boasts over 350 stalls. These stalls display an extensive range of food items, handicrafts, handloom textiles, and household products, creating a bustling marketplace for rural artisans. Additionally, the event is enriched with cultural programs that celebrate Maharashtra's heritage, making it a holistic experience for visitors.
Women's Empowerment at the Forefront
Addressing the gathering, Divisional Commissioner Vijayalakshmi Bidari emphasized the transformative impact of the 'Umed Mission'. She highlighted how this initiative is steadily changing rural livelihoods by enabling women to build sustainable enterprises through self-help groups. "Economic empowerment is the most visible indicator of women's progress," Bidari stated, "and the response to initiatives like 'Umed and Lakhpati Didi' shows how effectively rural women are embracing entrepreneurship."
Bidari provided compelling statistics to underscore the scale of this empowerment. In the past year alone, approximately 24 lakh women across Maharashtra have achieved the status of 'Lakhpati Didis', signifying their success in generating substantial income. From Nagpur district specifically, nearly 97,000 women reached this milestone, reflecting a significant surge in women's participation in income-generating activities across rural areas.
Support from Key Stakeholders
Vidarbha president of Sanskar Bharati, Kanchan Gadkari, praised exhibitions like Mahalaxmi Saras for providing a crucial marketplace for products crafted by women self-help groups. "These events help women expand their enterprises by connecting them directly with consumers," Gadkari noted, emphasizing the role of such platforms in fostering economic growth.
CEO of Umed – Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM), Nilesh Sagar, elaborated on the mission's efforts. "Women associated with self-help groups are being trained in various income-generating activities," he said. "Our mission is dedicated to helping more women become 'Lakhpati Didis', ensuring their financial independence and community development."
Distinguished Presence and Broader Impact
The inauguration was graced by notable figures, including actress Sonali Kulkarni, ZP CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, NMC commissioner Vipin Itankar, and standing committee chairman Shivani Dani. Their presence underscored the event's importance in promoting rural entrepreneurship and women's empowerment.
Overall, the Mahalaxmi Saras 2026 exhibition not only celebrates the rich cultural and culinary heritage of rural Maharashtra but also serves as a powerful testament to the strides being made in women's economic empowerment through initiatives like Umed Mission and Lakhpati Didi.
