Maharashtra Budget Boosts Major Expressway Project with Rs 14,886 Crore Allocation
The Maharashtra state budget, announced on Friday, has earmarked a substantial Rs 14,886 crore for the development of a critical greenfield expressway. This funding is specifically designated for the six-laning of the Shirur to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar expressway, covering a distance of 192.5 kilometers.
Project Overview and Phased Development
This expressway initiative is a significant infrastructure undertaking with a total estimated cost of Rs 22,400 crore. It aims to establish fast and direct connectivity between Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, spanning a comprehensive total length of 245.9 kilometers across two distinct phases.
The project is being developed by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC). The recent budget allocation targets the second phase of the expressway. Meanwhile, the first phase, which involves a 53.4 km stretch from Kharadi Junction to Shirur Bypass, is anticipated to receive its funding in the near future, ensuring the project's continuity.
Logistical Challenges and Land Acquisition
One of the major hurdles for this ambitious project is the extensive land acquisition required. According to MSIDC records, approximately 2,500 hectares of land need to be procured, presenting a considerable challenge for the state government. The expressway is planned to be constructed alongside the existing highway, which currently experiences heavy traffic congestion, highlighting the urgent need for this upgraded infrastructure.
Industrial and Economic Implications
Local industry leaders have strongly advocated for the expressway to extend up to the Shendra Interchange on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Atharveshraj Nandawat, Vice-President of the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA), emphasized the transformative potential of this project.
"The proposed expressway will create high-speed connectivity to Shendra-Bidkin, Jalna Dry Port, and major industrial hubs. These projects together will position Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as a rising logistics and manufacturing powerhouse," Nandawat stated, underscoring the strategic economic benefits.
Benefits for Commuters and Travelers
The expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters between Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Mangesh Relgaokar, a private firm professional who frequently travels this route, expressed optimism about the project's impact.
"The proposed greenfield expressway is expected to save a lot of time for travelers," Relgaokar noted, highlighting the practical advantages for daily commuters and businesses reliant on efficient transportation.
This substantial budget allocation marks a pivotal step in enhancing regional connectivity, fostering industrial growth, and alleviating traffic pressures in Maharashtra, positioning Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as a key hub in the state's infrastructure network.
