Mancurad Mangoes Hit Goa Markets at Rs 5,000 per Dozen

Mancurad Mangoes Make Seasonal Entry in Goa with Premium Pricing

The highly sought-after Mancurad mangoes have made their seasonal debut in Goan markets, with early arrivals in Panaji fetching prices as high as Rs 5,000 per dozen. Traders attribute this premium pricing to the typical start-of-season dynamics, where limited supply meets high demand from mango enthusiasts.

Weather Conditions Favor Bountiful Mango Crop

After post-monsoon rainfall ceased by October, Goa experienced a brief cold spell in November and December, followed by chilly winter nights in January. This weather pattern is considered ideal for mango flowering. Even daytime temperatures remained relatively cooler, which is believed to have contributed to profuse flowering of mango trees across the region.

However, areas such as Siolim, Calangute, and Morjim faced more stress due to the cold and dew, making mango flowers more susceptible to insect attacks. Despite this, the overall crop outlook is positive.

Farmers Report Exceptional Blooming Season

Mango farmer Rajesh Dhargalkar expressed optimism, stating, "Overall, the crop is very good this season because this time the trees bloomed almost 100%, with even the trees where we were not expecting to flower, blooming bountifully." He also noted that some mangoes might have been harvested earlier than usual to prevent damage from birds and rodents.

Market Dynamics and Price Expectations

Vendors report that the market lacks its usual buzz despite the arrival of Mancurad mangoes, primarily due to the high prices. Fruit vendor Nisar Nandihaldi explained, "The local buyers have figured out the pattern and now most of them snub the fruit until peak summer."

Prices are expected to moderate as arrivals increase in the coming weeks. By April, the minimum price is likely to drop to around Rs 1,000 per dozen, with further reductions to Rs 500 per dozen anticipated by May. This means that the common man may have to wait a few months before enjoying this King of Fruits at more affordable rates.

Last year, the variant was priced at Rs 6,000 per dozen, indicating that current prices, while high, are not unprecedented. The seasonal trend suggests a gradual price decline as supply ramps up, offering hope for mango lovers looking forward to a taste of Goa's prized produce.
