In a landmark achievement for India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki's inaugural electric vehicle, the eVitara SUV, has secured a top-tier 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests. This score represents the highest safety assessment ever received by any Maruti vehicle, setting a new benchmark for the brand as it enters the electric era.
Record-Breaking Safety Performance
Tested in its top-spec Alpha 61kWh variant, the eVitara demonstrated exceptional crash protection. It scored an impressive 31.49 out of 32 points in the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category. For child safety, it secured 43 out of 49 points in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) assessment. The Bharat NCAP authority has confirmed that this 5-star rating is applicable across all three planned variants: the Delta 49kWh, Zeta 61kWh, and the Alpha 61kWh.
Built on a Robust New Platform
The eVitara's stellar safety credentials are rooted in its new-generation architecture. The SUV is built on Suzuki's dedicated Heartect-e platform, which was co-developed in partnership with Toyota. This skateboard-style EV architecture employs a high proportion of advanced materials, with over 60% ultra-high tensile and high-strength steel in its construction. The vehicle dimensions—4,275 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height—firmly place it in the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment.
The safety suite on the eVitara is comprehensive. Standard equipment includes:
- Seven airbags for occupant protection.
- A full Level-2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).
- Features like Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control.
- Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, and a 360-degree camera.
- All-wheel disc brakes, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and a specially engineered battery pack with an energy-absorbing structure.
India Launch Strategy and Charging Infrastructure
For the Indian market, Maruti Suzuki will offer the eVitara with two battery pack options: 49kWh and 61kWh. Notably, the India-spec model will not feature an all-wheel-drive system, differentiating it from some international versions. The company has already begun exporting the eVitara from India, even before its domestic sales commence.
To alleviate customer concerns about EV ownership, Maruti has announced innovative solutions including Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), subscription plans, and assured buyback options. A major push on charging infrastructure is also underway. At the vehicle's launch, 2,000 Maruti Suzuki public chargers will be operational, with an ambitious target to expand this network to 1 lakh chargers by 2030, aiming for a charger every 5 to 10 kilometers.
The eVitara, first showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, will be sold exclusively through Maruti's premium Nexa dealerships. The company has confirmed that the SUV is set to go on sale by January 2026, with bookings anticipated to open in the very near future. This launch marks a pivotal moment for Maruti Suzuki, combining its mass-market appeal with top-tier safety and a decisive step into electric mobility.
