The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is planning to construct a Rs 100 crore biogas plant in Bhangrola village under the Manesar Municipal Corporation (MCM) area to divert the city's wet waste from the overburdened Bandhwari landfill. This initiative aims to provide a long-term solution for the scientific disposal and processing of biodegradable waste in Gurgaon.
Current Waste Generation and Challenges
Gurgaon generates approximately 1,200 metric tonnes of garbage daily, with a significant portion comprising wet waste from households, markets, hotels, and commercial establishments. The Bandhwari landfill, which receives mixed waste from both Gurgaon and Faridabad, has been under severe environmental stress, leading to complaints about foul odors, fires, and groundwater contamination in nearby areas. Over 17 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste remain unprocessed at the site.
Details of the Proposed Biogas Plant
MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that the civic body is considering sending segregated wet waste directly to the upcoming plant once it becomes operational. “We are planning to divert wet waste to the biogas plant proposed in Manesar. We are also exploring the option of sending waste generated by bulk waste generators to the facility,” Dahiya said.
An official added, “We have received the detailed feasibility report of the project. We will now send the proposal to the urban local bodies department for approval before proceeding with a concessionaire agreement. Once approved, the plant will be operational in two years. The capacity of the plant is 200 tonnes per day of organic wet waste.”
Expected Benefits
Diverting wet waste to a dedicated biogas plant is expected to significantly reduce the volume of mixed waste reaching the Bandhwari landfill. The plant will also generate biogas and organic manure from biodegradable waste, promoting sustainable waste management practices. MCG has already engaged two private agencies for waste processing and biomining operations at the landfill, but the pace of disposal remains a challenge.
This move is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the mounting environmental concerns associated with the Bandhwari landfill and moving toward a more sustainable waste management system in Gurgaon.
