MG Windsor EV: 70% Sales from Non-Metro India

MG Windsor EV Sales Highlight India's Expanding Electric Vehicle Market Beyond Major Cities

Electric vehicle adoption in India is experiencing a significant geographical shift, moving beyond the confines of major metropolitan areas. JSW MG Motor India has released compelling sales data that underscores this evolving trend. The company has announced that its flagship electric car, the MG Windsor EV, has achieved cumulative sales exceeding 65,000 units. Remarkably, a substantial 70 percent of this demand originates from non-metro markets, indicating a profound change in consumer behavior and market penetration.

Metro vs. Non-Metro Sales Distribution

According to the automaker's detailed breakdown, traditional metro hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai collectively account for only 30 percent of total Windsor EV sales. In stark contrast, the remaining 70 percent of purchases are driven by customers in smaller cities and towns across the country. This distribution marks a pivotal departure from earlier EV buying patterns, which were predominantly concentrated in urban centers due to factors like limited awareness and underdeveloped charging infrastructure.

Technical Specifications and Battery Options

The MG Windsor EV is engineered to deliver robust performance, generating 136 horsepower and 200 Newton-meters of torque. It is available with two distinct battery configurations to cater to varying range requirements. The standard variant is equipped with a 38 kWh battery pack, providing a claimed range of 332 kilometers on a single charge. For those seeking extended mileage, the Pro variant features a larger 52.9 kWh battery pack, capable of delivering up to 449 kilometers. Additionally, the model offers an innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option, with pricing starting at Rs 9.99 lakh plus Rs 3.9 per kilometer, enhancing affordability and flexibility for buyers.

Strategic Expansion and Future Plans

Capitalizing on this momentum, JSW MG Motor India is actively strengthening its presence in non-metro regions. The company currently operates an extensive network of 541 sales and service outlets nationwide, with only 51 located in the four major metros. This infrastructure supports its outreach efforts. Moving forward, MG plans to intensify awareness campaigns and customer engagement initiatives specifically tailored for smaller cities. The brand's electric vehicle portfolio has already demonstrated strong performance, with nearly one lakh units sold between October 2024 and February 2026, including popular models like the Comet and ZS EV.

Looking ahead, the company has ambitious plans to introduce four new models within the current year. Among these upcoming launches is a plug-in hybrid SUV, which is expected to further diversify its offerings and cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly mobility solutions across India's diverse automotive landscape.
