MG Windsor Tops 2025 EV Sales, Maruti Dzire Wins Overall Crown
MG Windsor is India's Best-Selling EV in 2025

The Indian automobile market in 2025 presented a fascinating story of diverse winners, proving that consumer preferences extend beyond the overwhelming demand for SUVs. While utility vehicles continued their popularity, an electric crossover and a trusted compact sedan emerged as the standout performers, capturing the top spots in their respective segments.

MG Windsor Electrifies the Market

In the rapidly growing electric vehicle space, the MG Windsor charged ahead to become India's best-selling EV for the calendar year 2025. Data reveals that JSW MG Motor India sold an impressive 46,735 units of the Windsor throughout the year. This remarkable volume established the automaker as the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the country to achieve such high sales with a single electric four-wheeler model.

The electric crossover maintained exceptional momentum across all twelve months, averaging nearly 4,000 units sold per month. It consistently recorded the highest month-on-month sales growth in the EV category, showcasing sustained consumer interest.

This success was a major driver for MG's overall electric strategy. The company concluded CY2025 with a 19 percent growth in total sales, while its electric vehicle volumes experienced a meteoric rise, growing by 111 percent compared to CY2024.

What Makes the Windsor a Winner?

The MG Windsor's attractive pricing and specifications have clearly resonated with Indian buyers. It enters the market with a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) starting price of Rs 9.99 lakh, coupled with a usage cost of approximately Rs 3.9 per kilometer. Under the hood, its electric motor delivers 136 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque.

Prospective customers have two battery options: a 38 kWh pack offering a claimed range of 332 km, and a larger 52.9 kWh battery in the PRO variant that promises an extended range of up to 449 km on a single charge.

Maruti Dzire: The Unshakeable Champion

While electric vehicles grabbed headlines, the title of India's best-selling car for 2025 went to a perennial favorite. Defying the SUV trend, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire compact sedan clinched the overall sales crown. Manufacturers dispatched a staggering 2.14 lakh (214,000) units of the Dzire during the calendar year.

This achievement underscores the enduring demand for compact sedans that deliver on core values like fuel efficiency, practicality, and low cost of ownership. The Dzire's success is particularly notable in a market landscape increasingly dominated by taller, bulkier SUVs.

Priced from Rs 6.26 lakh (ex-showroom), the Dzire continues to attract a vast buyer base. Its legendary fuel efficiency remains a key selling point, with the company claiming 24.79 kmpl for the petrol manual, 25.71 kmpl for the petrol AMT, and an impressive 33.73 km/kg for the CNG variant.

Two-Wheeler Leaders Hold Their Ground

The story in the two-wheeler segment followed a more predictable script, with established heroes continuing their reign. Models like the Hero Splendor and the Honda Activa maintained their positions at the top of the sales charts, demonstrating their unwavering popularity among Indian consumers.

The sales figures of 2025 paint a clear picture: the Indian automotive market is maturing and diversifying. While SUVs are immensely popular, there is significant and profitable space for vehicles that excel in specific niches—be it electric innovation, like the MG Windsor, or unmatched value and efficiency, like the Maruti Dzire.
