Mormugao Port Authority Launches Rs 36.2 Cr Dredging Project

Mormugao Port Authority Commences Major Maintenance Dredging Initiative

The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in Panaji has officially commenced the process for undertaking extensive routine dredging operations within its navigational channel and the areas surrounding its berths. This critical maintenance project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 36.2 crore for the upcoming financial year, reflecting the port's commitment to ensuring maritime safety and operational efficiency.

Scope and Details of the Dredging Contract

The comprehensive contract mandates the removal of roughly 2.5 million cubic metres of accumulated material from the port's channels and berth areas. This material encompasses a diverse range of sediment types, including:

  • Silt and clay deposits
  • Sand and hardened sand formations
  • Spilled cargo that has settled on the seabed over time

An MPA official highlighted that, unlike capital dredging which aims to deepen channels, maintenance dredging is specifically conducted to preserve the safety and navigability of existing channels for all vessels. The official further noted, "During the dredging operations, the contractor may also encounter small patches of compacted iron ore adjacent to the unloading berths, which will need to be addressed."

Challenges and Necessity of the Project

Sources within the port authority explained that the seabed in these areas often accumulates various obstructive materials that can impede maritime traffic. These include:

  1. Boulders and broken concrete pieces
  2. Debris from ships, such as metal fragments and rubber tyres
  3. Additional spilled cargo residues

Such accumulations pose a significant risk, potentially hindering the movement of both loaded cargo vessels and naval warships that utilize the port facilities. The dredging initiative is therefore essential to mitigate these navigational hazards and maintain uninterrupted port operations.

Project Timeline and Associated Studies

Once the contract is formally signed, MPA anticipates that the dredging work will require approximately 45 days to complete, with the timeline subject to variations based on prevailing weather conditions. As an integral component of this routine maintenance, the authority will also conduct:

  • A Side Scan Sonar analysis to map the seabed topography
  • Detailed soil investigation studies to assess sediment composition

These studies will provide crucial data to optimize the dredging process and ensure thorough clearance of the designated areas.

Parallel Plans for Channel Deepening

Concurrently, the port authorities are advancing plans for capital dredging to deepen the approach channel. This strategic move aims to accommodate larger vessels, specifically capesize and panamax-size cargo ships, which require greater draft depths. Having already secured the necessary environmental clearances, MPA intends to increase the channel depth from the current 14.4 metres to nearly 20 metres.

To fund this significant capital dredging project, the Mormugao Port Authority has formally requested financial assistance from the Central government, underscoring the project's importance for enhancing the port's capacity and competitiveness in regional maritime trade.
