MP Hotel Association Demands ESMA Inclusion Amid LPG Supply Crisis
The Madhya Pradesh Hotel Association has made a formal appeal to the state government, requesting that the hospitality sector be brought under the protective umbrella of the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). This urgent plea comes in response to severe operational disruptions caused by the irregular and unreliable supply of commercial LPG cylinders to hotels and restaurants across multiple regions of Madhya Pradesh.
Operational Challenges Mount for Hospitality Industry
Industry representatives from both the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India and the Indore Hoteliers Association have highlighted how the restriction and inconsistency in commercial LPG deliveries are directly affecting kitchen operations. Sumit Suri, who serves as chairman of the MP committee of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India and President of the Indore Hoteliers Association, emphasized the gravity of the situation.
"The supply of commercial LPG is irregular in several regions, and this is creating significant operational challenges for hotels and restaurants that depend on continuous, uninterrupted kitchen operations," Suri stated. He explained that establishments with accommodation facilities, restaurants, and banquet kitchens rely heavily on commercial LPG for their daily cooking needs, making consistent supply critical to their functioning.
Industry Adaptations and Workforce Concerns
In response to the supply issues, hotel and restaurant operators are implementing various strategies to mitigate the impact:
- Simplifying menus to reduce cooking complexity and LPG consumption
- Adjusting kitchen operations and schedules to align with available supply
- Exploring temporary alternative cooking methods and fuel sources
- Prioritizing essential services to maintain guest satisfaction
Suri warned that if the situation persists, operational pressure on hotels and restaurants could intensify significantly, particularly for larger establishments running multiple kitchens and banquet facilities. He highlighted the broader economic implications, noting that the hospitality sector serves as a major employment generator, supporting thousands of workers across various roles including chefs, kitchen staff, housekeeping teams, and service personnel.
"The industry is making every possible effort to ensure that employees do not suffer due to the current situation. Hotels are trying to maintain staff strength and avoid lay-offs while managing these operational challenges," Suri affirmed, underscoring the sector's commitment to workforce stability despite the difficulties.
Call for Government Intervention
The association's request for ESMA coverage represents a strategic move to secure priority status for LPG supplies to the hospitality industry. By classifying hotel and restaurant operations as essential services, the sector hopes to guarantee more reliable fuel deliveries, ensuring business continuity and protecting both employment and economic contributions to the state.
