Major Railway Block at Prabhadevi Station to Impact Mumbai Commuters
Western Railway has announced a significant operational block at Prabhadevi station in Mumbai, scheduled for the early hours of Sunday. This critical infrastructure work will involve the de-launching of girders for the Prabhadevi Road Over Bridge (ROB), directly affecting both suburban and long-distance train services during the intervening night of March 14 and March 15.
Block Timing and Operational Details
The comprehensive traffic and power block will be enforced across all railway lines at Prabhadevi from 1:30 am to 6:00 am. According to Western Railway officials, this period is essential for the removal and strategic repositioning of steel girders positioned above the railway tracks. This phase marks a pivotal step in the ongoing construction of the road overbridge, which aims to significantly enhance road connectivity in one of Mumbai's busiest central corridors.
Suburban Train Service Disruptions
Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, confirmed that suburban train services will be completely suspended between Churchgate and Prabhadevi during the block. Key stations including Matunga Road and Mahim will experience a complete halt in services. Additionally, numerous suburban trains will face cancellations, short-terminations, or will be reversed from major hubs such as Dadar and Bandra.
Officials have disclosed that a total of 45 suburban services will be cancelled due to the combined effects of the jumbo block and the intricate girder de-launching operations.
Service Resumption and Long-Distance Train Delays
Normal suburban operations are expected to resume in the early morning. The first suburban train is scheduled to depart from Churchgate at 5:52 am on the fast line, followed by another at 5:59 am on the slow line. Thereafter, local train services will operate according to the standard timetable on all lines.
The block will also impact several long-distance train services, resulting in notable delays:
- Train No. 09184 Varanasi–Mumbai Central: Regulated by 2 hours
- Train No. 22946 Okha–Mumbai Central: Delayed by 1 hour 45 minutes
- Train No. 12928 Ekta Nagar–Dadar: Regulated by 1 hour
- Train No. 12902 Ahmedabad–Dadar: Regulated by 1 hour
- Train No. 09052 Bhusaval–Dadar: Regulated by 45 minutes
Furthermore, Train No. 22953 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad, originally scheduled to depart at 5:40 am on March 15, will now leave 30 minutes later at 6:10 am.
Purpose and Broader Impact
This temporary disruption is part of a larger initiative to construct the Prabhadevi Road Over Bridge, a project designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve road connectivity in central Mumbai. While the block causes immediate inconvenience, it is a necessary step toward long-term infrastructural development that will benefit the city's transportation network. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and seek alternative transportation options during the affected hours.
