Mumbai-Pune Expressway Set for Major 10-Lane Expansion After Monsoon Season
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to commence work on expanding the Mumbai–Pune Expressway to 10 lanes following the conclusion of the monsoon season. This ambitious infrastructure project represents a significant upgrade for the critical transportation corridor that connects Maharashtra's two major economic hubs.
Financing Strategy and Timeline
To fund this massive undertaking, officials have proposed raising capital through financial institutions while extending toll collection on the expressway by an additional 15 years. This extension would push the current toll collection deadline from 2045 to 2060, providing a sustainable revenue stream for the project.
While the state government has granted in-principle approval, the project still awaits formal clearance from the cabinet infrastructure committee. Notably, no specific allocation was made for the expansion in the recent state budget, prompting MSRDC to pursue independent financing arrangements.
"Work is expected to commence post-monsoon and will be executed in phases to ensure traffic remains undisrupted," stated Anil Gaikwad, MSRDC vice-chairman and managing director. "If construction begins this year, the project is slated for completion within three years. By 2029-30, the expansion should be finished, as MSRDC already possesses most of the required land."
Addressing Aging Infrastructure and Growing Traffic
The 94.6-kilometer expressway, which connects Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale near Pune, was inaugurated in 2002. Now 24 years old, the roadway is approaching the end of its projected 30-year lifespan, making comprehensive upgrades increasingly urgent.
"It is time for a comprehensive upgrade and repair," Gaikwad emphasized. "The traffic pressure has become immense, and it is prudent to repair the existing road while simultaneously expanding it."
Current traffic statistics reveal substantial usage patterns, with approximately 65,000 vehicles traversing the expressway on weekdays and over one lakh vehicles on weekends. Traffic volume continues to grow at an annual rate of 5–6%, further justifying the expansion initiative.
Project Scope and Cost Considerations
While the 13-kilometer "missing link" project already includes a 10-lane stretch through the Khandala ghat section, this new project will widen the remaining sections of the corridor to create a uniform 10-lane highway throughout.
The total expansion is estimated to cost 14,260 crore rupees, with the 10-laning work alone adding 1,420 crore to construction costs, bringing that specific portion to 8,440 crore rupees.
A significant advantage for this project is MSRDC's existing land ownership along most of the route. Only small additional land parcels near tunnel zones require acquisition, potentially allowing the project to bypass the lengthy land acquisition delays that typically plague major infrastructure works.
Community Support and Additional Developments
The expansion plan has garnered support from both local representatives and regular commuters. MLA Mahesh Landge described the expansion as a "long-pending demand," noting that current traffic levels have become "unbearable."
Commuter Meenal Kowshik echoed this sentiment: "The congestion is frustrating. The state must expedite the widening and ensure that the work is managed in phases to avoid further bottlenecks during construction."
New Truck Terminal Planned
In a related development, MSRDC is exploring the creation of a dedicated truck terminal to enhance safety and logistics efficiency. The proposed facility would occupy a 5-acre plot near Taje, close to the Khalapur toll plaza.
The terminal would feature:
- Capacity for approximately 500 heavy vehicles
- Modern logistics hub amenities
- Rest facilities for drivers
- Design to keep heavy traffic off the main carriageway during peak hours
This comprehensive approach to expressway improvement addresses both immediate capacity concerns and long-term infrastructure sustainability for one of Maharashtra's most vital transportation arteries.
