Mysuru Tourism Industry Faces Severe Crisis Due to Commercial LPG Shortage
Mysuru, a premier tourist destination in Karnataka that typically welcomes thousands of visitors daily, is experiencing a significant decline in tourist arrivals due to a critical shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. Hotel Owners' Association (HOA) president C Narayana Gowda raised this alarming issue on Saturday, urging immediate government intervention to prevent further damage to the hospitality sector and related industries.
Hotel Operations Disrupted, Tourists Left Stranded
Speaking to reporters, Gowda revealed that the commercial LPG cylinder shortage has created an unprecedented situation where potential tourists are now calling hotels in advance to verify whether food services will be available before confirming their visits. This unusual precaution reflects the severity of the supply crisis affecting Mysuru's hospitality infrastructure.
"Hotels are being forced to purchase gas cylinders from private suppliers at exorbitant prices just to maintain basic operations," Gowda explained. "Without these emergency measures, approximately 50% of hotels would have already shut down completely."
Government Response and Industry Concerns
Gowda acknowledged that Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa has requested hotel owners to cooperate for one week while the government works to stabilize the situation. "We are extending our full cooperation as requested by the minister," Gowda stated. "However, if this crisis persists beyond the suggested timeframe, thousands of workers and families who depend entirely on the hotel industry for their livelihoods will face dire circumstances."
The HOA president has specifically appealed to the Karnataka government to reallocate at least 20% of available LPG cylinders to the hotel industry as an immediate relief measure. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling on Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to personally intervene and resolve the supply crisis at the earliest possible opportunity.
Ripple Effects Across Multiple Sectors
The commercial LPG shortage has created cascading problems beyond the hospitality industry:
- Tourist Disappointment: Several hotels remained closed on Saturday, leaving many visitors struggling to find places serving meals and disrupting travel plans.
- Agricultural Impact: Reduced hotel activity has dramatically decreased demand for vegetables, causing prices to crash. Gowda noted that tomatoes are now selling for as low as Rs 3 per kilogram, resulting in substantial financial losses for local farmers.
- Economic Vulnerability: The interconnected nature of tourism, hospitality, and agriculture means the crisis threatens multiple segments of Mysuru's economy simultaneously.
Immediate Consequences and Future Concerns
The situation has reached a critical point where hotel owners face impossible choices between paying premium prices to private gas suppliers or closing their establishments entirely. "If hotel closures continue for more than a few additional days, it will create serious problems for everyone involved—from tourists and hotel workers to farmers and local businesses," Gowda cautioned.
He urged the Karnataka government to consider the interests of all stakeholders—including farmers, tourists, hotel employees, and business owners—when formulating a response to the commercial LPG supply crisis. The association emphasizes that timely intervention is essential to prevent long-term damage to Mysuru's reputation as a reliable tourist destination and to protect the region's economic stability.
