Nagpur Factory Blast: 18 Workers Killed, 24 Injured in Detonator Unit Explosion
A catastrophic explosion ripped through a detonator manufacturing unit operated by SBL Energy Ltd in Raulgaon village, Katol tehsil, approximately 30 kilometers from Nagpur, on Sunday morning. The devastating blast claimed the lives of at least 18 workers, with a majority being women, and left 24 others injured, 18 of them in critical condition.
Scene of Devastation and Rescue Challenges
The explosion, which occurred around 7 am, reduced large sections of the plant to rubble, with towering flames and thick black smoke visible from a distance. It took place in the ‘nonel’ (non-electric) detonator crimping section during the morning shift, which typically runs from 6 am to 2:30 pm and usually has about 40-45 workers on duty.
Rescue operations faced significant hurdles due to poor road connectivity, making it difficult for ambulances and fire brigade vehicles to access the site promptly. Multi-agency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and fire brigade units, rushed to the scene. Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, while rescue personnel worked under extremely hazardous conditions to pull out the injured and recover bodies from the debris.
Human Toll and Identification Efforts
The explosion left bodies charred beyond recognition, necessitating DNA sampling for identification. Relatives were called to assist in this painful process at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, where the bodies were sent for autopsy. Inconsolable family members thronged the factory compound, desperate for news about their loved ones.
The injured were admitted to various hospitals in Nagpur. Six workers from Raulgaon under Kalmeshwar police station limits—Gayatri Irpachi, Kavita Uike, Seema Waghmare, Bharati Shende, Archana Pethe, and Suchita Bagde—were admitted to a private hospital in Awasthi Nagar. Two critically injured women, Varsha Tekam and Vaishali Sathe, were shifted to another private hospital in Khamla, where a total of 18 injured workers are undergoing treatment. Most patients have suffered severe mixed types of thermal burns.
Official Response and Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of those killed in the blast and Rs 50,000 each for the injured. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that the state government would provide Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased, while the company management will also offer financial aid to those affected.
Fadnavis described the incident as "extremely unfortunate and tragic" and mentioned on social media platform X that he was coordinating with the local administration. "Orders have been issued for a detailed inquiry into this incident," he stated.
Investigation and Safety Review
Following visits by revenue and guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and MLA Ashish Jaiswal, authorities ordered a detailed inquiry to determine the cause of the explosion and review safety measures at explosives manufacturing units. Kalmeshwar police had initially registered an accidental death case, but sources indicated that experts from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) and the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) submitted a preliminary report. Based on this, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder will be registered against concerned management personnel.
An officer of deputy superintendent of police rank will lead the investigation. SP (Nagpur Rural) Harssh A Poddar assured that a transparent investigation would be conducted based on expert findings.
Political and Administrative Visits
Senior officials, including Nagpur district collector Vipin Itankar, IG (Nagpur Range) Sandip Patil, SP Harssh A Poddar, BJP MLA Charansingh Thakur, and other administrative officers, visited the site and hospitals. Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh also met the injured and consoled bereaved families at the medical college.
Company sources revealed that the explosion occurred in the section where detonators are crimped. Regular operations had not yet begun for the day, and workers were only making preparations ahead of the morning shift when the blast took place. A few workers managed to flee as parts of the structure collapsed and debris flew across the premises, with localities in the vicinity also left rattled by the incident.
